Why Acupuncture Is Going Mainstream in Medicine
When the opioid addiction crisis began to surge in the U.S. about a decade ago, Dr. Medhat Mikhael spent a lot of time talking to his patients about other ways to heal pain besides opioids, from other types of medications to alternative treatments. As a pain management specialist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., he didn’t anticipate leaving behind the short-term use of opioids altogether, since they work so well for post-surgical pain. But he wanted to recommend a remedy that was safer and still effective. That turned out to be acupuncture. “Like any treatment, acupuncture...

Role of TREK-1 in Health and Disease, Focus on the Central Nervous System
Conclusion and Perspectives Since their cloning 20 years ago, the physiological importance of TREK-1 channels has continued to grow (Figure 3). Today, TREK-1 channels have been shown to be important and their presence is essential in a number of physiopathological processes. Their involvement in these different processes demonstrate the necessity to design pharmacological modulators, activators or inhibitors, of these channels to correct any TREK-1-related dysfunctions. Despites a number of studies and many molecule screenings, only few putative new drugs were identified. The activators belonging to the ML and BL series ...

How To Find Your Calling (From 5 People Who Found Theirs)
Why does our culture perpetuate the belief that “finding oneself” is an age-specific phase, reserved only for angst-ridden teenagers and wanderlust-stricken 20-somethings? The notion of finding a passion is all-too-frequently aligned with youth and impulsivity, but truthfully, we’re all quietly seeking our next challenge, our next calling. We’re of the belief that it’s never too late to course correct your life, and given the job-hopping numbers, we’re probably not the only ones. Though the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not regularly track career changes, in a recent study of late...

Lupus, Selena Gomez's Autoimmune Disease, Explained
In an interview with Billboard magazine this week, Selena Gomez confirmed she's been struggling with an autoimmune disease that forced her to take a step back from her work and cancel tours in 2013 and 2014. "I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy," she told Billboard. "That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke." What is lupus? Similar to other autoimmune diseases, lupus causes the body's immune system to attack its own tissue and organs.  Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms -- including joint pain, chronic fati...

Hacking The Nervous System
(Photo: © Job Boot) One nerve connects your vital organs, sensing and shaping your health. If we learn to control it, the future of medicine will be electric. When Maria Vrind, a former gymnast from Volendam in the Netherlands, found that the only way she could put her socks on in the morning was to lie on her back with her feet in the air, she had to accept that things had reached a crisis point. “I had become so stiff I couldn’t stand up,” she says. “It was a great shock because I’m such an active person.”It was 1993. Vrind was in her late 40s and working two jobs, athletics coach and a carer for disabled ...

Lamotrigine for chronic neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia in adults.
CONCLUSIONS: Large, high-quality, long-duration studies reporting clinically useful levels of pain relief for individual participants provided no convincing evidence that lamotrigine is effective in treating neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia at doses of about 200 to 400 mg daily. Given the availability of more effective treatments including antiepileptics and antidepressant medicines, lamotrigine does not have a significant place in therapy based on the available evidence. The adverse effect profile of lamotrigine is also of concern. PMID: 24297457 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
