Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels on Statins and Cardiovascular Event Risk in Stable Coronary Artery Disease - An Observation From the REAL-CAD Study
CONCLUSIONS: A very low on-treatment LDL-C level (<70 mg/dL) was not associated with lower cardiovascular event risk compared with moderately low on-treatment LDL-C level (70-100 mg/dL) in patients receiving the same doses of statins.PMID:36104250 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-22-0168

Risk of stroke in genetically verified familial hypercholesterolemia: A prospective matched cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: No significant excess risk of incident total and ischemic stroke in FH, and no difference in total stroke risk among the FH population with low, intermediate, and high statin exposure were observed. The observed relationship between FH and hemorrhagic stroke was no longer significant after adjusting for use of anti-thrombotic medication.PMID:36084445 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.08.015

Perioperative Medical Management for Symptomatic Carotid Artery Interventions
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe goal of this review is to provide the reader with an overview of symptomatic carotid stenosis and the approach to medical management of patients undergoing surgical intervention with both carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS).Recent FindingsCEA is recommended for patients with moderate to severe symptomatic carotid stenosis and transient ischemic attack (TIA) or non-disabling stroke. More recently CAS has also been shown to be a beneficial, less invasive option for patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis. All patients need urgent medical therapy to reduce the risk of...

Does a History of Cancer Influence the Effectiveness of Statins on Outcomes After Stroke?
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with statins after ischemic stroke may confer additional survival benefits for people who also have had cancer.PMID:36065808 | DOI:10.1161/STROKEAHA.122.038829

Long-Term Evolocumab in Patients with Established Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Long-term LDL-C lowering with evolocumab was associated with persistently low rates of adverse events for over >8 years that did not exceed those observed in the original placebo arm during the parent study and led to further reductions in cardiovascular events compared with delayed treatment initiation.PMID:36031810 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.061620

Risk of stroke in genetically verified familial hypercholesterolemia: A prospective matched cohort study
Individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), causing severely elevated LDL-C, are expected to have a higher risk of ischemic stroke. The risk of hemorrhagic stroke and impact of statin use is however not known. We aimed to investigate the risk of incident total, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in individuals with FH compared to controls and to explore the association between cumulative statin use and risk of total stroke in FH.

Dynamic changes of carotid atherosclerosis and their relations with stroke recurrence in patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack
CONCLUSION: Plaque progression occurred in 46% of stroke or TIA patients. Plaque progression was significantly associated with clinical stroke recurrence. Plaque regressed in 6.5% of patients. Patients with regression were younger than those without.PMID:35996235 | DOI:10.2174/1567202619666220822141804

Design, methods and baseline characteristics of the Beijing Hospital Atherosclerosis Study: a prospective dynamic cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This study has successfully initiated an investigation into the roles of new biosignatures in predicting CAD among Chinese Han patients undergoing CAG. To the best of our knowledge, this cohort is the first study systematically focusing on the association of lifestyle biomarkers and biological age with CAD risk. Findings from this study will provide biomarkers to discriminate the presence of CAD and to predict subsequent cardiovascular events.PMID:35965802 | PMC:PMC9372652 | DOI:10.21037/atm-22-2834

Association of polygenic risk scores with incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events among individuals with coronary artery calcium score of zero: The multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: Among individuals with CAC = 0, the ASCVD PRS was associated with incident ASCVD events. This appears to be driven by genetic variants related to stroke but not CHD, and particularly among women and non-Whites. ASCVD event rates remained below the threshold recommended for consideration for initiation of statin therapy even in the high PRS groups.PMID:35952728 | DOI:10.1016/j.pcad.2022.08.003
