Stroke Prevention in Symptomatic Large Artery Intracranial Atherosclerosis Practice Advisory: Report of the AAN Guideline Subcommittee
Neurology. 2022 Mar 22;98(12):486-498. doi: 10.1212/WNL.0000000000200030.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To review treatments for reducing the risk of recurrent stroke or death in patients with symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic arterial stenosis (sICAS).METHODS: The development of this practice advisory followed the process outlined in the American Academy of Neurology Clinical Practice Guideline Process Manual, 2011 Edition, as amended. The systematic review included studies through November 2020. Recommendations were based on evidence, related evidence, principles of care, and inferences.MAJOR RECOMMENDATIONS: ...

Rhabdomyolysis due to warfarin and atorvastatin combination therapy in a patient with ischemic heart disease: (A drug interaction)
CONCLUSION: Statins are widely prescribed to patients with cardiovascular problems. Therefore, clinicians should pay attention to the patient's medical history, current prescribed doses, and drug interactions when adding new drugs or adjusting existing drugs.PMID:35242328 | PMC:PMC8861410 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103384

An Updated Review of Cardiovascular Events in Giant Cell Arteritis
J Clin Med. 2022 Feb 15;11(4):1005. doi: 10.3390/jcm11041005.ABSTRACTGiant cell arteritis (GCA) is a systemic vasculitis with a direct and indirect increased risk of acute and chronic vascular events, affecting large and medium vessels, and responsible for most of the morbidity and mortality of this disease. We aimed in this review to provide an updated synthesis of knowledge regarding cardiovascular events observed in GCA. By definition, GCA patients are over 50 and often over 70 years old, and subsequently also present age-related cardiovascular risk factors. In addition, the systemic and vascular inflammation as well as...

Association Between Intensity of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Reduction With Statin-Based Therapies and Secondary Stroke Prevention: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study suggests that the benefits and risks of more intensive LDL-C-lowering statin-based therapies for recurrent stroke risk reduction might be more favorable than the benefits and risks of less intensive LDL-C-lowering statin-based therapies, especially for patients with evidence of atherosclerosis.PMID:35188949 | DOI:10.1001/jamaneurol.2021.5578

Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity as Adjunct Risk Marker for Assessing Cardiovascular Disease Risk: Prospective Study
CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that aortic stiffness predicted major adverse cardiovascular events in a cohort of elderly individuals, improving the performance of a widely used cardiovascular disease risk estimator. Aortic pulse wave velocity measurement is scalable, radiation-free, and easy to perform. Further studies on its applicability in cardiovascular disease risk assessment in primary care settings are needed.PMID:35139665 | DOI:10.1161/HYPERTENSIONAHA.121.17589

Disparities between guideline statements on acute and post-acute management of cervical artery dissection
Rev Cardiovasc Med. 2022 Jan 11;23(1):9. doi: 10.31083/j.rcm2301009.ABSTRACTEven though cervical artery dissection is one of the main reasons for ischemic stroke in young patients, acute management and post-acute primary or secondary prevention of cerebral ischemia differ significantly in different centers and countries. These discrepancies are reflected by the differences in guideline recommendations of major stroke societies. Our narrative review aims to shed light on the different recommendations in guideline-statements of stroke societies and to give an overview of the current literature concerning acute management and...
