Disparities between guideline statements on acute and post-acute management of cervical artery dissection
Rev Cardiovasc Med. 2022 Jan 11;23(1):9. doi: 10.31083/j.rcm2301009.ABSTRACTEven though cervical artery dissection is one of the main reasons for ischemic stroke in young patients, acute management and post-acute primary or secondary prevention of cerebral ischemia differ significantly in different centers and countries. These discrepancies are reflected by the differences in guideline recommendations of major stroke societies. Our narrative review aims to shed light on the different recommendations in guideline-statements of stroke societies and to give an overview of the current literature concerning acute management and...

Atherosclerosis: Known and unknown
Pathol Int. 2022 Jan 25. doi: 10.1111/pin.13202. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerotic disease, such as myocardial infarction and stroke, is the number one killer worldwide. Atherosclerosis is considered to be caused by multiple factors, including genetic and environmental factors. In humans, it takes several decades until the clinical complications develop. There are many known risk factors for atherosclerosis, including hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, diabetes and smoking, which are involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis; however, it is generally believed that atherosclerosis is vascular chronic infl...

Circulating Metabolome and White Matter Hyperintensities in Females and Males
Conclusions: Circulating metabolomic measures, including multiple lipid measures (e.g., lysophosphatidylcholines, hydroxysphingomyelins, low-density lipoprotein size and composition) and non-lipid metabolites (e.g., hydroxyphenylpyruvate, glucuronate) associate with WMH in a general population of middle-aged and older adults. Some metabolomic measures show marked sex specificities and explain sizable proportion of WMH variance.PMID:35050683 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.121.056892

Prognostic indicators for the onset of ischaemic versus haemorrhagic stroke in stable coronary artery disease
Medicine (Baltimore). 2021 Dec 3;100(48):e27973. doi: 10.1097/MD.0000000000027973.ABSTRACTThe incidence of stroke may be increased in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). We aimed to investigate the specific risk factors for the development of ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke in stable CAD patients.Patients with stable CAD were prospectively enrolled for future cardiovascular events in Taiwan. All the patients had received coronary interventions and were stable for least 1 month before enrolment. The incidence of ischaemic stroke was identified and confirmed by telephone and hospital records. Baseline characterist...

Sodium ozagrel and atorvastatin for type 2 diabetes patients with lacunar cerebral infarction
CONCLUSION: Sodium ozagrel with atorvastatin can reduce inflammatory reactions; regulate ESR and HMGB1, PON-1, and MIF levels; control blood glucose and lipid indexes; and alleviate nerve injury without increasing adverse effects of atorvastatin alone.PMID:35047123 | PMC:PMC8696649 | DOI:10.4239/wjd.v12.i12.2096

Arterial Atherosclerosis: Vascular Surgery Interventions
Am Fam Physician. 2022 Jan 1;105(1):65-72.ABSTRACTAtherosclerotic vascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerotic stenosis of the internal carotid or intracranial arteries causes up to 15% of strokes. Peripheral artery disease affects up to one in five people in the United States who are 60 years and older and nearly one-half of those who are 85 years and older. Renal artery stenosis may affect up to 5% of people with isolated hypertension and up to 40% of people with other atherosclerotic diseases. All patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease should receive a comprehensive program of guidelin...

Acute and Chronic Cardiovascular Manifestations of COVID-19: Role for Endotheliopathy
Methodist Debakey Cardiovasc J. 2021 Dec 15;17(5):53-62. doi: 10.14797/mdcvj.1044. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTSARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), is associated with a bewildering array of cardiovascular manifestations, including myocardial infarction and stroke, myocarditis and heart failure, atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, venous thromboembolism, and microvascular disease. Accumulating evidence indicates that a profound disturbance of endothelial homeostasis contributes to these conditions. Furthermore, the pulmonary infiltration and edema, and later pulmonary fibrosis, in patients with ...
