Gender differences in cardiovascular risk, treatment, and outcomes: a post hoc analysis from the REWIND trial
Conclusions. In REWIND, most women met clinically relevant treatment targets, but in lower proportions than men. Women had a lower risk for all cardiovascular outcomes except stroke. Clinical trials.gov registration number: NCT01394952.PMID:36723445 | DOI:10.1080/14017431.2023.2166101

Population-wide cohort study of statin use for the secondary cardiovascular disease prevention in Scotland in 2009-2017
Conclusions Statin use remains suboptimal for the secondary ASCVD prevention, particularly in women and older patients, and following ischaemic stroke and PAD hospitalisations. Improving this would offer substantial benefits to population health at low cost.

Strategies of Clopidogrel Load and Atorvastatin Reload to Prevent Ischemic Cerebral Events in Patients Undergoing Protected Carotid Stenting Results of the Randomized ARMYDA-9 CAROTID (Clopidogrel and Atorvastatin Treatment During Carotid Artery Stenting) Study
ConclusionsIn patients undergoing carotid stenting, a strategy using both a 600-mg clopidogrel load and a short-term reload with high-dose atorvastatin protects against early ischemic cerebral events. These results, obtained along with routine mechanical neuroprotection, provide new evidence of the optimization of drug therapy before percutaneous carotid intervention. Prognostic importance of atrial fibrillation in asymptomatic aortic stenosis: The Simvastatin and Ezetimibe in Aortic Stenosis study
Conclusion: Rate of AF is moderate in asymptomatic AS. Longstanding but not episodic AF was, independently predictive of increased risk of heart failure and non-hemorrhagic stroke. New-onset AF was associated with cardiac decompensation.

Impact of statin dose on major cardiovascular events: A mixed treatment comparison meta-analysis involving more than 175,000 patients
Conclusions: In this study, in which all available evidence from statin trials was simultaneously analyzed, the benefit of more intensive therapy was restricted to non-fatal events.

Abstract 328: Coronary Artery Disease Performance Measures And Statin Use Between Patients With Recent Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)and Patients With Recent Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG): An Analysis From The NCDR(R). Poster Session III
Conclusion: Although overall compliance with CAD PMs between patients undergoing recent CABG compared to recent PCI is similar, only about one-fourth of patients in both groups met between 75-100% of eligible CAD PMs. Furthermore, distinct gaps were noted for specific PMs in the recent CABG group. Our study highlight areas for future quality improvement initiatives aimed at improving compliance in PMs in patients who have undergone recent revascularization.

Treatment with statins improves long-term survival in individuals with carotid artery stenosis
Statin therapy has an established role in the treatment of arteriosclerotic disease and in secondary stroke prevention. Up to 20% of relative risk reduction in major vascular events per 1mmol/L decrease in LDL cholesterol is reported . Atherosclerotic carotid stenosis is an important risk factor for stroke and the inflammatory process of arteriosclerosis is shown to be most pronounced in the early stages. We have earlier shown that statin treatment may prevent and even reverse the progression of stenosis in the internal carotid artery (ICA) over time . We have now 10years later investigated survival and causes of death dur...

Hypertension in pregnancy is associated with elevated C-reactive protein levels later in life
Objectives:We assessed whether hypertension in pregnancy is associated with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in later life, possibly reflecting an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Background:Elevated CRP levels have been associated with hypertension in pregnancy and with CVD. Methods:We studied 2463 women from the Genetic Epidemiology Network of Arteriopathy (GENOA) study. Participants were categorized as nulliparous women (n = 219), women with a history of normotensive pregnancies (n = 1839), or women with a history of a hypertensive pregnancy (n = 405). Using multiple linear regression ...

Left atrial size and function as predictors of new-onset of atrial fibrillation in patients with asymptomatic aortic stenosis: The simvastatin and ezetimibe in aortic stenosis study
Abstract: Background: Left atrial (LA) size and function change with chronically increased left ventricular (LV) filling pressures. It remains unclear whether these variations in LA parameters can predict new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) in asymptomatic patients with aortic stenosis (AS).Methods: Data were obtained in asymptomatic patients with mild-to-moderate AS (2.5≤ transaortic Doppler velocity ≤4.0m/s), preserved LV ejection fraction (EF), no previous AF, and were enrolled in the Simvastatin and Ezetimibe in Aortic Stenosis study. Peak-aortic velocity, LAmax volume & LAmin volume were measured by echocardiograph...

Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction Comparison of Patients With and Without Angina Pectoris (From the Duke Databank for Cardiovascular Disease)
This study investigated the characteristics and outcomes of patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and angina pectoris (AP).BackgroundAP is a predictor of adverse events in patients with heart failure with reduced EF. The implications of AP in HFpEF are unknown.MethodsWe analyzed HFpEF patients (EF ≥50%) who underwent coronary angiography at Duke University Medical Center from 2000 through 2010 with and without AP in the previous 6 weeks. Time to first event was examined using Kaplan-Meier methods for the primary endpoint of death/myocardial infarction (MI)/revascularization/stroke (i.e....

Long-term impact on healthcare resource utilization of statin treatment, and its cost effectiveness in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease: a record linkage study
Conclusion Five years' primary prevention treatment of middle-aged men with a statin significantly reduces healthcare resource utilization, is cost saving, and increases QALYs. Treatment of even younger, lower risk individuals is likely to be cost-effective.
