Upper extremity arterial thrombus presenting at birth
We report a 36-week neonate born to a 31-year-old G2P0 woman by emergency c-section due to decreased fetal movement. The pregnancy had been uncomplicated up to that point and the mother had no significant medical history. Birth weight was 2.49 kg. Apgars were 6 and 5. What we learned about the role of antenatal magnesium sulfate for the prevention of cerebral palsy
Based on the convincing case control study of Nelson and Grether which suggested that the administration of magnesium sulfate to mothers prior to early preterm birth might protect their offspring from cerebral palsy, and a pilot study by John Hauth et al. at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network, with co-funding from the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke embarked on the Beneficial Effects of Antenatal Magnesium (BEAM) Trial in 1997.

Neonatal purpura fulminans due to protein C deficiency
A 3-day-old term male neonate born of third-degree consanguineous marriage was admitted with purplish black, oval tender lesions with erythematous rim on both soles and left hip. Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke in Adults Born Preterm – The Helsinki Birth Cohort Study
ConclusionsWe found no increased risk of CHD or stroke up to old age in people born preterm, although women born early preterm had a higher rate of CHD. There is a discrepancy between increased risk factors in younger generations born preterm and little or no increase in manifest disease in older age. Uncovering reasons underlying this discrepancy may give important insights into the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Serial cranial ultrasonography or early MRI for detecting preterm brain injury?
Conclusions Advanced serial CUS seems highly effective in diagnosing preterm brain injury, but may miss cerebellar abnormalities. Although MRI does identify these lesions, feasibility is limited. Improved safety, better availability and tailored procedures are essential for MRI to increase its value in clinical care.
