Dyadic psycho-social interventions for stroke survivors and family caregivers: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
CONCLUSIONS: This study provided moderate support for the benefits of dyadic psycho-social intervention in improving survivor and caregiver's functional independence, quality of life, depression, anxiety, self-efficacy and care burden. Nevertheless, due to limitations of the study, it was deemed necessary that this topic is studied further.RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This review suggests that dyadic psycho-social interventions should be considered as effective strategies for decreasing psycho-social problems of stroke survivors and caregivers, and provides evidence for the formulation of targeted intervention programs....

The association of baseline depressive symptoms and stress on withdrawal in a national longitudinal cohort: The REGARDS Study
CONCLUSIONS: Depressive symptoms, but not perceived stress, were significantly associated with withdrawal from a large study. Prevalence of depressive symptoms at baseline is likely an important indicator of participant retention in large prospective cohorts.PMID:37182817 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2023.05.007

Mental Health and Quality of Life in Pulmonary Embolism: A Literature Review
Adv Respir Med. 2023 Apr 20;91(2):174-184. doi: 10.3390/arm91020015.ABSTRACTPulmonary embolismis an acute disease with chronic complications and, although it is not considered a chronic disease, it requires close follow-up. The scope of the present literature review is to decode the existing data concerning quality of life and the mental health impact of PE during the acute and long-term phases of the disease. The majority of studies reported impaired quality of life in patients with PE when compared to population norms, both in the acute phase and >3 months after PE. Quality of life improves over time, irrespectively o...

Effectiveness of caregiver-mediated exercise interventions on activities of daily living, anxiety and depression post-stroke rehabilitation: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Caregiver-mediated exercise interventions appear to have beneficial impacts on basic ADL for stroke survivors, suggesting caregiver-mediated exercise interventions as a potentially feasible way to improve functional independence.IMPACT: Caregiver-mediated intervention with exercises as a major component could be a promising approach to augment stroke rehabilitation. Future research should include high-quality studies with focus on specific intervention components or to explore caregiver outcomes.PMID:35451521 | DOI:10.1111/jan.15239

Effectiveness of technology-based interventions on psychological morbidities, quality of life for informal caregivers of stroke survivors: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Technology-based interventions had beneficial effects in alleviating depressive symptoms among informal caregivers.IMPACT: Technology-based interventions serve as a support mechanism for informal caregivers of stroke survivors who face time-constrains. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are warranted to elucidate sustainability, optimal format and dosage of intervention.PMID:34904746 | DOI:10.1111/jan.15130

Marginal structural models for life-course theories and social epidemiology: Definitions, sources of bias, and simulated illustrations
We describe selected MSMs corresponding with common theoretical life-course models and identify key issues for consideration, related to time-varying confounding and late-study enrollment. Using simulated data mimicking a cohort study evaluating the effects of depression in early-, mid-, and late-life on late-life stroke risk, we examined whether and when specific study characteristics and analytic strategies may induce bias. In the context of time-varying confounding, inverse probability weighted estimation of correctly specified MSMs accurately estimated the target causal effects, while conventional regression models sho...
