Network pharmacology study on the potential effect mechanism of Chuanzhi Tongluo Capsule in the treatment of cerebral infarction
Conclusion: The active ingredients in Chuanzhi Tongluo capsule may participate in the therapeutic process of cerebral infarction by regulating the calcium, cAMP, cGMP-PKG, and TNF signaling pathway through critical targets such as INS, ALB, IL-6, VEGFA, TNF, and TP53.

The role of rehabilitation and vitamin D supplementation on motor and psychological outcomes in poststroke patients
Post-Stroke depression affects between 12% and 72% of patients who have suffered a stroke. The association between low serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D) and increased risk of depression is reported in both stroke and non-stroke patients. Similarly, high 25(OH) D levels might be associated with greater functional improvement during rehabilitation program. We wanted to investigate the effects of an intensive rehabilitation on poststroke outcomes. We wondered if the daily rehabilitation of motor and cognitive functions could also have an effect on mood and functional abilities in addition to or as an alternati...

Fish, Cardiovascular Disease, and Mortality
Fish and shellfish (hereafter referred to as fish) are major sources of the dietary long-chain ω-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) and also contain other nutrients, such as vitamin D, riboflavin, iodine, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and iron. The summed results of observational studies of fish intake, randomized clinical tria ls of fish oil supplements, and associated mechanistic and experimental studies suggest that regular fish consumption may decrease the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) and coronary heart disease (CHD), with more uncertain effec...

Anesthetic considerations in hyperparathyroid crisis: A case report
Introduction: Hyperparathyroid crisis is a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of severe calcium intoxication. Parathyroidectomy is the only curative method for hyperparathyroid crisis. Several case reports and case series have been published on the medical and surgical treatments for hyperparathyroid crisis, however, few reports have focused on the associated perioperative anesthetic management. Patient concerns: A 48-year-old Chinese woman presented with a 2-week history of nausea and vomiting and complained of mental status alteration including confusion and agitation in the 24 hours prior to...

Isradipine Versus Placebo in Early Parkinson Disease: A Randomized Trial.
Conclusion: Long-term treatment with immediate-release isradipine did not slow the clinical progression of early-stage PD. Primary Funding Source: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. PMID: 32227247 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Role of injection laryngoplasty in preventing post-stroke aspiration pneumonia, case series report
Conclusion: Injection laryngoplasty proved to be both successful and safe in improving glottic closure with immediate results in those who had failed to show a positive response after long-term swallowing rehabilitation. The positive and dramatic clinical outcomes were observed through changes in the coughing force. Our case series support the use of injection larygnoplasty as a powerful adjunctive treatment method to prevent aspiration pneumonia in post-stroke patients with vocal fold insufficiency. Pre- and post-injection peak cough flow changes may reflect improvement in glottic closure and indicate the safety of swal...

Effects of Nutritional Supplements and Dietary Interventions on Cardiovascular Outcomes: An Umbrella Review and Evidence Map.
Conclusion: Reduced salt intake, omega-3 LC-PUFA use, and folate supplementation could reduce risk for some cardiovascular outcomes in adults. Combined calcium plus vitamin D might increase risk for stroke. Primary Funding Source: None. PMID: 31284304 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Nilvadipine in mild to moderate Alzheimer disease: A randomised controlled trial
This study reports the findings of the first large-scale Phase III investigator-driven clinical trial to slow the rate of cognitive decline in Alzheimer disease with a dihydropyridine (DHP) calcium channel blocker, nilvadipine. Nilvadipine, licensed to treat hypertension, reduces amyloid production, increases regional cerebral blood flow, and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anti-tau activity in preclinical studies, properties that could have disease-modifying effects for Alzheimer disease. We aimed to determine if nilvadipine was effective in slowing cognitive decline in subjects with mild to moderate Alzheimer dise...

The prescription of antiplatelet medication in a very elderly population: An observational study in 15  141 ambulatory subjects
ConclusionIn this study, which is very interested for its size and the advanced age of the subjects, long‐course AM was prescribed in one third of ambulatory elderly patients. Coronary heart disease, severe hypertension and diabetes were more frequent in AM subjects. However, the low percentage of declared strokes was surprising. We provide additional data to doctors following subjects with AM.

Circulating calcium concentrations, vascular disease and mortality: a systematic review
Abstract Associations between serum calcium and vascular disease have been reported, but the consistency of these findings is unknown. We conducted a systematic review to determine whether circulating calcium concentrations are associated with risks of cardiovascular disease and death in normocalcaemic populations. We conducted PubMed searches up to 18 December 2014 and scrutinized reference lists of papers. Eligible studies related serum calcium to mortality or cardiovascular events in humans. A follow‐up of at least one year was required for longitudinal studies. Studies in populations selected on the basis of renal di...
