LDL-C target attainment in secondary prevention of ASCVD in the United States: barriers, consequences of nonachievement, and strategies to reach goals
Postgrad Med. 2022 Aug 25. doi: 10.1080/00325481.2022.2117498. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. Elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a major causal risk factor for ASCVD. Current evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that lowering LDL-C reduces the risk of secondary cardiovascular events in patients with previous myocardial infarction or stroke. There is no lower limit for LDL-C: large, randomized studies and meta-analyses have found continuous benefit and no safety concerns in patients achieving LDL-C levels &...

Effects of statins on the risks of ischemic stroke and heart disease in human immunodeficiency virus infection, influenza and severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus: respiratory virus infection with steroid use
CONCLUSION: Statin use was associated with lower aHRs for ischemic stroke and heart disease in those with HIS disorders with comorbidities.PMID:35590450 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2022.2080359

The debate over the optimal blood pressure treatment target of less than 130/80 mmHg
Postgrad Med. 2022 Mar 14. doi: 10.1080/00325481.2022.2052516. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its good control is associated with lessening or prevention of these complications. Therefore, the objective of this paper was to analyze the debate over the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) recommendations for a blood pressure (BP) treatment target of < 130/80 mmHg across all age groups. The purpose of these guidelines was that they will result in greater prevention of cardio...

Patient preferences for mitral valve regurgitation treatment: a discrete choice experiment
CONCLUSION: This study of US adults with DMR provides quantitative measures of risk tolerance for tradeoffs related to repair by a beating heart approach relative to conventional open-heart surgery (standard of care). These results may inform DMR treatment choices from regulatory agencies, payers, clinicians, and patients considering a beating heart repair or treatments with similar attributes as potential new alternatives to conventional surgery.PMID:34981982 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2021.2020571

Incidence and predictors of progression of carotid atherosclerosis in a low-income Chinese population-a prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first longitudinal study to explore the incidence and predictors of CAS progression in a low-income rural population in China with a high prevalence of stroke. More detailed and precise strategies for prevention and intervention of CAS progression are necessary, especially in low-income rural areas in China.PMID:34696679 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2021.1997483
