Effect of Tai Chi on Cardiac and Static Pulmonary Function in Older Community-Dwelling Adults at Risk of Ischemic Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Trial
ConclusionThe 12-week tai chi exercise did not have an obvious beneficial effect on cardiac structure, cardiac function and static lung function in older community-dwelling adults at risk of ischemic stroke. The study with a longer duration of intervention should be necessary. (Trial registration No. ChiCTR-TRC-13003601)

Association between physical activity and stroke in a middle-aged and elderly Chinese population
Conclusions: Compared with low PA, vigorous PA, but not moderate PA, was associated with a lower risk of stroke in middle aged and elderly people in southern China, specifically among men. These findings suggested that increasing PA is beneficial.

Genetic polymorphisms of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T and risk of ischemic stroke in a southern Chinese Hakka population
In this study, a total of 1967 ischemic stroke patients and 2565 controls of Chinese Hakka ethnicity were recruited. The MTHFR C677T polymorphisms were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and microarray method. The risk of ischemic stroke was estimated by logistic regression analysis. The frequencies of CC, CT, and TT genotypes were 52.67% versus 55.63%, 40.31% versus 38.52%, and 7.02% versus 5.85% in patients with ischemic stroke versus controls, respectively. The frequency of T allele was significantly higher in ischemic stroke patients (27.17%) than in controls (25.11%) (P = .026, odds ratio [...

Association of smoking with risk of stroke in middle-aged and older Chinese: Evidence from the China National Stroke Prevention Project
This study aimed to investigate the association between smoking and risk of stroke in middle-aged and older Chinese adults, based on the data from the China National Stroke Prevention Project. A community-based cross-sectional study with 12,704 (5681 men, 7023 women) Chinese adults aged ≥40 years was conducted to examine the association of smoking with stroke. Multivariable logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Among the study population, a total of 524 stroke survivors were identified. The age-adjusted prevalence of stroke was 4.06% for both sexes, 2.95% for wo...

Beneficial effects of combined administration of Clopidogrel and Aspirin on the levels of proinflammatory cytokines, cardiac function, and prognosis in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: A comparative study
Conclusion: Taken together, the combination therapy of Clopidogrel and Aspirin provided a better improvement on both the cardiac function and outcome of STEMI patients in the Hebei province of China, with reduced inflammation as well.

Sedentary behavior and the risk of cardiac-cerebral vascular diseases in southern China
Accumulating evidence has reported that prolonged periods of sedentary time have been recognized as a risk factor for cardiocerebrovascular disease. However, whether high levels of sedentary behavior are associated with an increased risk of cardiocerebrovascular disease in different regions remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between sedentary behavior and the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in Jiangxi Province of China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 15,364 participants in Jiangxi Province of China from November 2013 to August 2014, using standardized questi...

Value of electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy as a predictor of poor blood pressure control: Evidence from the China stroke primary prevention trial
Recent studies have shown that hypertension is poorly controlled in many populations worldwide. Electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy is a common manifestation of preclinical cardiovascular disease that strongly predicts cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. However, little information is available regarding the role of left ventricular hypertrophy in blood pressure (BP) control. We aimed to assess the relationship between electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy and BP control in the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial. The study population included 17,312 hypertensive patients who were se...

Association between ambient air pollution and daily hospital admissions for ischemic stroke: A nationwide time-series analysis
We examined the associations between air pollution and daily ischemic stroke admission using a two-stage method. Poisson time-series regression models were firs tly fitted to estimate the effects of air pollution in each city. Random-effects meta-analyses were then conducted to combine the estimates. Meta-regression models were applied to explore potential effect modifiers. More than 2 million hospital admissions for ischemic stroke were identified in 172 c ities in China. In single-pollutant models, increases of 10 μg/m3 in particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter

Value of using the international classification of functioning, disability, and health for stroke rehabilitation assessment: A multicenter clinical study
This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) in stroke rehabilitation assessment in China and to identify correlations between the ICF and several commonly used clinical assessment instruments for stroke. In total, 52 hospitals and 5 premier rehabilitation and neurology research centers participated in this cross-sectional multicenter clinical study. A total of 2822 stroke patients admitted to a neurology or rehabilitation department of a participating medical center between July 2012 and June 2014 were included. The ICF checklist contains 4 p...

Matrix metalloproteinase-2 gene polymorphisms are associated with ischemic stroke in a Hainan population
This study investigated the relationship between MMP-2 and stroke risk in the Southern Chinese population. We evaluated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of MMP-2 in stroke patients in an association study using a case-control design. Six SNPs of MMP2 were selected and genotyped by Agena MassARRAY. SNPStats, Haploview was used to analyze genetic data. Two SNPs in the MMP-2 gene were significantly associated with stroke risk. For rs1132896 (C versus G allele), the C allele was significantly reduced stroke risk (OR = 0.56, 95% confidence intervals [95% CI] = 0.39–0.81, P = .002). The effect of the T alle...

Predictive values of CSS and NIHSS in the prognosis of patients with acute cerebral infarction: A comparative analysis
This study aims to investigate the predictive values of the Chinese Stroke Scale (CSS) and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) in the prognosis of patients with acute cerebral infarction. A total of 399 patients with acute cerebral infarction were assessed using CSS and NIHSS within 1 day after admission. Then, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were established, and the area under the curves of these 2 scoring systems was compared. The area under the curve of CSS and NIHSS was 0.796 and 0.794, respectively. CSS and NIHSS have good predictive values for the prognosis of patients with acute...
