High prevalence of middle cerebral artery calcification is associated with cardiovascular mortality in hemodialyzed patients: an overlooked part of arterial tree?
ConclusionThis study showed that large artery stiffness and not the presence of peripheral arterial disease or carotid artery stenosis have the prognostic role of middle cerebral arteries ’ calcifications and cardiovascular mortality in hemodialyzed patients. The presence of middle cerebral arteries’ calcifications diagnosed by a non-invasive method should be considered a marker of middle-sized conduit arteries atherosclerosis, subclinical brain damage, and future fatal cardiovas cular events.

Neonatal stroke and haematuria: Questions
AbstractThis is a report of an infant born near term with neonatal stroke and haematuria. Changes were noted on foetal magnetic resonance images, and these persisted postnatally. A routine renal ultrasound scan during follow-up detected haematuria with no associated proteinuria. A likely pathogenic genetic mutation was identified. This case highlights a relatively newly discovered cause for hereditary nephropathy affecting the basement membrane, initially affecting the glomerular but later the renal tubular basement membranes. The renal phenotype, pathogenic genotype and pathological findings on renal biopsy are discussed.

ConclusionsThis case highlights a relatively newly discovered cause of hereditary nephropathy in which the basement membrane is affected, with initial effects on the glomerular membranes and subsequent effects on the renal tubular basement membranes.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections and other infections in patients hospitalized for acute stroke: A prospective cohort study of two different silicone catheters.
CONCLUSION: CAUTIs were the most frequent healthcare-associated infections, slightly ahead of pulmonary tract infections. No advantages of the coated catheter could be found in this cohort of critically ill patients. PMID: 27328334 [PubMed - in process]

An autopsy case of vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia under hemodialysis due to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease
Abstract A 60-year-old male with end-stage kidney disease due to autosomal polycystic kidney disease began maintenance hemodialysis in 2005. A brain CT scan showed dilatation of left vertebral artery, basilar artery, bilateral post cerebral artery, and middle cerebral artery. Coronary artery calcification, cardiovascular events, and death: a prospective cohort study of incident patients on hemodialysis
Conclusions Respondent burden is high for additional testing around the initiation of dialysis. High coronary calcification in patients new to ESRD has a tendency to predict cardiovascular outcomes and death, though effects are attenuated when adjusted for age.
