Multifactorial Analysis of Factors Affecting Recurrence of Stroke in Japan
Data on factors affecting stroke recurrence are relatively limited. The authors examined potential factors affecting stroke recurrence, retrospectively. The study participants were 1087 patients who were admitted to stroke centers suffering from first-ever ischemic stroke and returned questionnaires with usable information after discharge. The authors analyzed the association between clinical parameters of the patients and their prognosis. Imaging acute ischemic stroke patients' brains did not lead to improved outcomes
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) The use of advanced imaging shortly after the onset of acute stroke failed to identify a subgroup of patients who could benefit from a clot-removal procedure, a study has found. The randomized controlled trial known as Mechanical Retrieval and Recanalization of Stroke Clots Using Embolectomy was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health, and was published online Feb. 8 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

NIH network revolutionizes stroke clinical research

NIH awards $40 million in grants to reduce stroke disparities in the US
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Four research centers will develop high-impact culturally tailored interventions aimed at lowering stroke risk among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. Together the centers are expected to receive $40 million in funding over five years, contingent on the availability of funds from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health.

UCLA, USC get $2M to develop stroke center network in Southland
(University of California - Los Angeles) A three-way partnership between the UCLA Stroke Center at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center, the University of Southern California (USC) Comprehensive Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center at Keck Medicine of USC, and UC Irvine has been awarded a $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to address those three stroke priorities.

New imaging method may predict risk of post-treatment brain bleeding after stroke

Brain-scan guided emergency stroke treatment can save more lives
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Advances in brain imaging can identify a greater number of stroke patients who can receive therapy later than previously believed, according to a new study. The results of the Endovascular Therapy Following Imaging Evaluation for the Ischemic Stroke (DEFUSE 3) trial demonstrated that physically removing brain clots up to 16 hours after symptom onset in selected patients led to improved outcomes compared to standard medical therapy. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
