Imaging spectrum of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation related neurologic events in children
CONCLUSIONS: Our series revealed PRES in ECMO-related neurologic events in addition to commonly reported thrombotic and hemorrhagic stroke in the literature. Availability of cross-sectional imaging and awareness of radiologists to these complications during ECMO or after weaning help in prompt diagnosis and treatment.PMID:36305438 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2022.323

Bivalirudin or Unfractionated Heparin for Anticoagulation in Pediatric Patients on Continuous Flow Ventricular Assist Device Support: Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study
Conclusions: Use of bivalirudin for anticoagulation in patients on CF-VAD support was associated with lesser odds of hemorrhagic complications compared with use of UFH. Bivalirudin “washout” was successful in medical management of six of eight cases of possible pump thrombosis.

Unusual case of stroke in childhood
You receive a prealert call from a paramedic team stating they are managing a 12-year-old girl with acute left-sided weakness. As you prepare for the patient’s arrival, you go through a list of potential differentials. Question 1 Which of the following is not part of the differential list? Haemorrhagic stroke. Hypoglycaemia. Bell’s palsy. Migraine. Todds’ paresis. Question 2 What is the recommended time to CT following this type of presentation to the emergency department? 15 min. 40 min. 60 min. 120 min. The time to CT is only applicable to adult patients. The family report intermittent frontal headaches...

Stroke in pediatric ECMO patients: analysis of the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database
CONCLUSIONS: Over the years, there is an apparent increase in the diagnosis of stroke. All types of stroke in ECMO patients are associated with increased LOS, although mortality is increased in hemorrhagic and combined stroke only.IMPACT: Stroke is a commonly seen complication in pediatric patients supported by ECMO. Understanding the trends will help in identifying modifiable risk factors that predict poor outcomes in this patient population.PMID:35505077 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-022-02088-7

Synthesizing Core Outcome Sets for outcomes research in cohort studies: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: This COS synthesis generated outcome constructs that are of high value to stakeholders (participants, health providers, services), relevant to life course research, and could position cohorts for trial capabilities.IMPACT: We synthesized existing Core Outcome Sets as a transparent methodology that could prioritize outcomes for lifecourse cohorts with an interventional focus. "Quality of life", "adverse events", "medication use", "hospitalization", and "mortality" are important outcomes across pregnancy, newborns, childhood, and early-to-mid-adulthood (the age range relevant to parents). Other common outcomes (s...

What are Some Risk Factors for Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Outcomes?
Discussion “Neonatal encephalopathy, manifesting as altered responsiveness, seizures, apnea and abnormal muscle tone and reflexes, resulting from hypoxic-ischemic injury is termed hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).” Neonatal encephalopathy can be associated with other problems including stroke, hemorrhage, infection, pre-term brain injury and hypoglycemia as some examples. Sometimes more than one of these entities occurs simultaneously such as hypoglycemia and HIE. HIE can result in long-term neurological problems including motor, behavioral, and cognitive problems that can become apparent even years later....

Cockayne syndrome type: a very rare association with hemorrhagic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Cockayne syndrome is rarely associated with stroke; we report the clinical and neuroradiologic findings of CS presenting with a hemorrhagic stroke.PMID:34738376 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2021.05.022
