Awareness of Stroke Risk Factors and Warning Signs in Nigerian Adolescents Compared with Adults
Stroke, a significant health problem affecting adults, is increasing among younger age groups, particularly because of changing lifestyles. The aim of the study was to compare the awareness of stroke risk factors and warning signs among students and teachers in selected secondary schools in Osun State, Nigeria.

Endovascular Stroke Therapy Results Improve over Time: The ‘Learning Curve' at a New Comprehensive Stoke Center
Conclusions: At a new community-based CSC, improved outcome occurred from year 1 to year 2, and trends towards decreased mortality, fewer complications, and improved revascularization were observed. Furthermore, the data shows that improvement in NIHSS score after EST is associated with decreased mortality following stroke in this setting, implying a net benefit.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2014;4:235-242

Characterization of fine motor development: Dynamic analysis of children's drawing movements.
In this study, we investigated children's fine motor development by analyzing drawing trajectories, kinematics and kinetics. Straight lines drawing task and circles drawing task were performed by using a force sensitive tablet. Forty right-handed and Chinese mother-tongue students aged 6-12, attending classes from grade 1 to 5, were engaged in the experiment. Three spatial parameters, namely cumulative trace length, vector length of straight line and vertical diameter of circle were determined. Drawing duration, mean drawing velocity, and number of peaks in stroke velocity profile (NPV) were derived as kinematic parameters...

Outcomes of endovascular mechanical thrombectomy and intravenous tissue plasminogen activator for the treatment of vertebrobasilar stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients requiring IV-tPA and/or mechanical thrombectomy for the treatment of posterior-circulation strokes suffer from high mortality rates. Increased age is associated with significantly higher mortality rates among posterior-circulation stroke patients who require mechanical thrombectomy. PMID: 24465258 [PubMed]

Poor Awareness of Stroke—A Hospital-Based Study from South India: An Urgent Need For Awareness Programs
Background: Stroke treatment has reached a new benchmark with thrombolytic therapy. However, India has witnessed a tremendous increase in morbidity and mortality of stroke over the past few decades. The prime deciding factor is initiation of treatment within the time window, which requires early recognition of stroke symptoms. We wished to analyze the lacunae in the stroke knowledge in our population. This hospital-based study assessed awareness of the public regarding stroke. Methods: Two trained medical students interviewed accompanying relatives using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Statistical Packa...

Effects of Stroke Education Using an Animated Cartoon and a Manga on Elementary School Children
Background: Stroke education for the youth is expected to reduce prehospital delay by informing the bystander of appropriate action to take and providing knowledge to prevent onset of stroke in future. Previously, we developed effective teaching materials consisting of an animated cartoon and a Manga for junior high school students. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of our educational materials for stroke education taught by schoolteachers to elementary school children. Methods: Using our teaching materials, a 30-minute lesson was given by trained general schoolteachers. Questionnaires ...

Quantifying Cerebral Collaterals In Carotid Artery Dissection May Help Stratify Stroke Risk. (P3.110)
CONCLUSIONS: These uncontrolled data suggest that a quantified score of distal cerebral collaterals could help stratify stroke risk and help guide management in patients with carotid artery dissection. Further controlled, prospective study in a larger and more diverse sample is warranted.Study Supported by: AHA/ASA NCRP 13CRP14140001Disclosure: Dr. Southerland has received personal compensation in an editorial capacity for Neurology Podcast. Reducing Time to Treatment - The Role of Stroke Neurologist as First Responder (S5.006)
CONCLUSIONS: The use of a stroke-trained attending neurologist as a first responder and stroke team leader resulted in rapid patient evaluation and faster decision regarding thrombolytic therapy, improving time to treatment and time to CT.Disclosure: Dr. Ozark has nothing to disclose. Quality Improvement Project: Improving the Time To Treatment in Inpatient Acute Ischemic Stroke (P7.130)
Conclusion/Proposal: In the inpatient setting there was a significant delay in the time to CT-scan and to t-PA; the main source of delay was time to CT-scan. There are many possible reasons for the delay: location of the CT-scanner, unfamiliarity with strokes by non-neurology staff, ready availability of t-PA. We proposed to target house staff education and t-PA availability. We developed a "stroke-code" checklist to be distributed to house staff from different services after a small explanatory lecture. We also developed an order form to create a zero wait time for t-PA, allowing the RN/PCA to be the first one served in t...

Identifying Novel Biomarkers of Cerebral Ischemia through the Use of Mass Spectroscopy (S15.004)
CONCLUSIONS: Mass spectroscopy-based proteomics is a potential new tool to help identify biomarkers for cerebral ischemia. Ultimately, a panel of proteins may serve as a marker for cerebral ischemia or TIA. We have identified three candidate proteins as possible indicators for cerebral ischemia. Larger studies are needed to confirm our results. Evaluation of Sexual Functions of Women with Stroke (P7.157)
CONCLUSIONS:Sexual functions are affected negatively in women with stroke and considered to be associated with increased disability, levels of independence and accompanied depression, and age. Therefore, women with stroke should also be evaluated as to sexual functions during the follow-up.Study Supported by:NoneDisclosure: Dr. Gumus has nothing to disclose. Taking Neurology to the Underserved - A Pilot Initiative in an Urban Homebound Program (P6.007)
CONCLUSIONS: Our pilot program highlights types of chronic neurologic illnesses afflicting the homebound population, treatment interventions utilized, and clinical challenges encountered. By considering the real-world intersection of disease and living environment, trainees gained perspective on the debilitating impact of neurological illness on homebound patients. This pilot program reveals the need and feasibility of neurological home based care as an important clinical, educational, and palliative paradigm.Disclosure: Dr. Ramdhani has nothing to disclose.
