A unique finding of the basilar artery
AbstractVariants of the posterior intracranial circulation are important for surgeon, interventionalists and radiologists. Herein, a unique configuration of the basilar artery is reported. A 54-year-old man with a history of COPD, hypothyroidism, smoking, and hyperlipidemia presented to an outside institution with nausea, confusion, altered mental status, and ataxia. The patient was evaluated for stroke. Imaging revealed rotation of the basilar apex of 180 degrees, fetal configuration of the posterior communicating artery, right posterior cerebral artery filling from the left vertebral artery, and duplication of the left a...

Roles of N-myc downstream-regulated gene 2 in the central nervous system: molecular basis and relevance to pathophysiology
AbstractN-myc downstream-regulated gene 2 (NDRG2) is a member of the NDRG family, whose members have multiple functions in cell proliferation, differentiation, and stress responses. NDRG2 is widely distributed in the central nervous system and is uniquely expressed by astrocytes; however, its role in brain function remains elusive. The clinical relevance of NDRG2 and the molecular mechanisms in which it participates have been reported by studies using cultured cells and specimens of patients with neurological disorders. In recent years, genetic tools, including several lines ofNdrg2-knockout mice and virus-mediated gene tr...

Crossed anterior cerebral circulation in the anterior communicating artery complex, first case report with angiographic evidence
ConclusionCerebral diagnostic angiography has become more available and frequent because of the rising in endovascular tools to treat stroke patients. Considering this new variation and others is important to discard pathology.

Reference luminal diameters of the carotid arteries among healthy Nigerian adults
CONCLUSIONS: This sonographic study on healthy Nigerian adults has given us normal reference values of the luminal diameters of the carotid arteries among Nigerians, which clinicians can make reference to, when assessing carotid artery diameters of patients in Nigeria.PMID:34184750 | DOI:10.5603/FM.a2021.0062

Circle of Willis: anatomical variations of configuration. A magnetic resonance angiography study
CONCLUSIONS: Unilateral variations were the most common changes found in CoW configuration. The correct assessment of the CoW configuration may prove useful in the planning and follow-up of brain surgery and interventional procedures, as well as in estimating the prognosis of patients suffering from stroke or other related cerebral vascular events.PMID:34966998 | DOI:10.5603/FM.a2021.0134

Comparative efficacy and safety of acupuncture and Western medicine for poststroke thalamic pain
Anat Rec (Hoboken). 2022 Mar 3. doi: 10.1002/ar.24902. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoststroke thalamic pain (PSTP) is one of the most common sequelae following stroke. Analgesics, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and surgical treatment are conventional treatment methods of PSTP, but these methods have limited efficacy, cost more, and cause a likelihood of adverse reactions. Clinical studies have shown that acupuncture has a significant analgesic effect on PSTP without obvious side effects. But, there is a lack of high-quality evidence concerning its effectiveness and safety to support its use. Therefore, this study aime...
