Impact of mechanical circulatory support on post-transplant stroke risk
This study assesses if the type of circulatory support device affects stroke risk in this population. The study cohort of 4257 adult patients bridged with mechanical support to cardiac transplant were derived from the UNOS transplant registry data. Risk factors assessed were age, gender, ischemic time, diabetes (recipient), durable mechanical support at listing and mechanical ventilation pre-transplant. Blood pressure and stroke risk in left ventricular assist devices
Ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke are one of the most devastating outcomes arising from treatment of end-stage congestive heart failure with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD)1. Stroke after LVAD is associated with increased risk of mortality and is a leading cause of not qualifying for transplantation. The risk of stroke is one of many factors limiting more widespread adoption of this technology for end-stage heart failure. The risk factors for stroke in LVAD have been the subject of several studies, with recent infection2 and changes in anti-thrombotics being commonly found3.

BOSTON (CBS) – Diet soda has long been touted as a healthier alternative to sugary soft drinks, but a new study raises some concerning questions. According to new research published in the American Heart Association’s journal Stroke, consuming one or more artificially sweetened drinks per day may be linked to a higher risk of stroke and dementia. The ABC's of Stroke Prevention: Reduction in Stroke Frequency Following a Quality Improvement Intervention by the Action Learning Network
To assess the frequency of stroke among ventricular assist device patients following a quality improvement bundled intervention (the “ABCs of Stroke Prevention” [ABCs] which focused on Anticoagulation, Blood pressure, and Communication) within the Advanced Cardiac Therapies Improving Outcomes Network (ACTION). The bundle intervention comprised 3 interventions. These were: a document harmonizing how to implement and maintain b ivalirudin infusion, a blood pressure management protocol and a daily stroke prevention checklist.
