Application of the Brixton Spatial Anticipation Test in Stroke: Ecological Validity and Performance Characteristics.
This study examined the ecological validity and performance characteristics of a relatively new measure of executive function, the Brixton Spatial Anticipation Test, which does not place the aforementioned demands on these patients. A total of 57 ischemic stroke patients with frontal lobe and subcortical lesions were administered the Brixton, on average 2 weeks post-stroke, during inpatient rehabilitation and assessed using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) upon discharge. Brixton performance was significantly correlated with the FIM Total and FIM Cognitive Subtotal at discharge but unrelated to FIM Motor Subtotal....

Depression after Minor Stroke: Prevalence and Predictors
: Severity of stroke and disability after stroke are major predictors of post-stroke depression (PSD). The prevalence of PSD in patients with minor stroke is expected to be low because minor stroke is characterized by mild neurological dysfunction. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence and predictors of PSD in patients with minor ischemic stroke.

Cognitive Screening Following Stroke: Are We Following Best Evidence‐based Practice in Australian Clinical Settings?
ConclusionsCurrent evidence indicates cognitive screening tools, in their current form, do not perform well in stroke populations due to a variety of factors including poor content validity and lack of sensitivity. It appears that most Australian stroke patients with cognitive impairment are not receiving the assessment and rehabilitation services they require. Recommendations to adapt current screening tools, develop new stroke‐specific screening measures, and consider cognitive assessment protocols other than screening are discussed.

Upper Alpha Based Neurofeedback Training in Chronic Stroke: Brain Plasticity Processes and Cognitive Effects.
Abstract In the present study, we investigated the effects of upper alpha based neurofeedback (NF) training on electrical brain activity and cognitive functions in stroke survivors. Therefore, two single chronic stroke patients with memory deficits (subject A with a bilateral subarachnoid hemorrhage; subject B with an ischemic stroke in the left arteria cerebri media) and a healthy elderly control group (N = 24) received up to ten NF training sessions. To evaluate NF training effects, all participants performed multichannel electroencephalogram (EEG) resting measurements and a neuropsychological test battery a...

Psychological Determinants of Medication Adherence in Stroke Survivors: a Systematic Review of Observational Studies.
CONCLUSIONS: This review provides foundations for evidence-based intervention design by establishing psychological determinants most influential in stroke survivors' medication adherence. Six TDF domains do not appear to have been tested, possibly representing gaps in research design. Future research should standardise and clearly report determinant and medication adherence measurement to facilitate meta-analysis. The range of determinants explored should be broadened to enable more complete understanding of stroke survivors' medication adherence. PMID: 28421453 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Assessing the predictive value of a neuropsychological model on concurrent function in acute stroke recovery and rehabilitation.
CONCLUSION: Neuropsychological assessment contributes independently to the determination of multiple domains of functional function, above and beyond common medical variants of stroke, in the early weeks of recovery and rehabilitation. Multiple tests of executive function are recommended to develop a greater appreciation of a patient's concurrent functional abilities. PMID: 29939107 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Comparison of Treatment Rates of Depression After Stroke Versus Myocardial Infarction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Data
Conclusions Despite the high frequency of depression after stroke and MI and the existence of efficacious treatment strategies, people often remain untreated. Innovative strategies are needed to increase the use of effective antidepressive interventions in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Using dual-task methods to enhance cognitive performance in the acute phase of stroke: a proof of concept study.
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest the possibility that cognitive interventions aimed at restoring lost function can be administered in the early days post-stroke and can produce beneficial outcomes, in much the same way that early motor or speech intervention programs have been shown to produce long-term benefits. Neuropsychological outcome following thalamic stroke in adolescence: an identical twin comparison.
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest risk for deficits in encoding of new verbal information following bilateral thalamic stroke in adolescence, as well as risk for persistent cognitive deficits despite initial improvements. This is consistent with descriptions of anterograde memory impairments in adults with similar lesions. PMID: 30472911 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Recovery from stroke: factors affecting prognosis.
CONCLUSIONS: The issue highlights the need for clinical neuropsychologists to be aware of the latest research on recovery from stroke and the importance of both assessment and management strategies to reduce impact on daily life. PMID: 30882270 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Parent experiences and developmental outcomes following neonatal stroke.
Conclusions: This study highlights the role of the neuropsychologist in the child's care in educating families and monitoring outcomes, emphasizes mental health support for parents of children with a history of neonatal stroke, and reiterates how environmental factors outside of the neonatal stroke itself can impact the child's functioning. Word-finding in confrontation naming and picture descriptions produced by individuals with early post-stroke aphasia.
Conclusion: Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between performance in confrontation naming and in connected speech production in the first days after stroke onset and also suggest that discourse analysis may provide unique, possibly more complex information. Does stroke volume influence heartbeat evoked responses?
Biol Psychol. 2021 Aug 17:108165. doi: 10.1016/j.biopsycho.2021.108165. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe know surprisingly little on how heartbeat-evoked responses (HERs) vary with cardiac parameters. Here, we measured both stroke volume, or volume of blood ejected at each heartbeat, with impedance cardiography, and HER amplitude with magneto-encephalography, in 21 male and female participants at rest with eyes open. We observed that HER co-fluctuates with stroke volume on a beat-to-beat basis, but only when no correction for cardiac artifact was performed. This highlights the importance of an ICA correction tailored to th...
