Effects of introducing a fee for inpatient overstays on the rate of death and readmissions across municipalities in Norway
This study examines the effects of the reform on the rate of death and readmissions occurring within 60 days of hospitalization. We use aggregated municipal data for years 2009, 2010, 2012–2014 (N = 1646) for Norwegian patients (age 18+) hospitalized in the same years for COPD/asthma, heart failure, hip fracture, and stroke. We stratify our analyses of the municipal data by these patient groups. Our linear regression models test for moderated (interaction) effects whereby associations between the reform and the rate of death and readmissions vary by whether or not patients were classified as ready for discharge and in ...

VATA-ADL: The Visual Analogue Test for Anosognosia for Activities of Daily Living
CONCLUSIONS: Anosognosia (overestimation of abilities) for ADL is frequent, even in post-acute stages post-stroke. Some other patients underestimated their abilities, indicating that poor metacognition of one's own abilities in brain damaged patients is bi-directional. Both types of misestimation may have clinical consequences worth considering for the wellbeing of patients and their carers.PMID:35313346 | DOI:10.1093/arclin/acac009

Changes in painting styles of two artists with Alzheimer's disease.
A substantial body of literature supports the idea that systematic changes can occur in artists' painting styles after the onset of degenerating neurological illnesses like Alzheimer's disease or Fronto-temporal dementia. However, these studies have typically been descriptive and qualitative in their analyses. Our study was motivated to show that quantitative methods can be applied to the neuropsychology of art production and to determine whether there are systematic changes in the art produced by two individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using the Assessment of Art Attributes which probes 6 formal characteristics (de...

Autonomic effects of suggestive placebo interventions to increase or decrease blood pressure: A randomized controlled trial in healthy subjects
Abstract: Objective: Placebo effects on pain and other subjective parameters are well-established, but the evidence for placebo effects on autonomic functions is scarce. Our randomized-controlled trial aimed to investigate autonomic responses after a suggestive placebo intervention intended to increase or decrease blood pressure (BP).Methods: 92 healthy subjects inhaled a placebo spray with the prior suggestion that it contained an effective drug to either increase or decrease BP, or the information that a placebo was administered (controls). BP, heart rate, stroke volume, peripheral resistance, heart rate variability and ...

The Necessity-Concerns Framework: a Multidimensional Theory Benefits from Multidimensional Analysis.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Delivered Live on the Internet to Individuals Suffering from Mental Fatigue After an Acquired Brain Injury
In conclusion, we believe that it is possible for individuals suffering from mental fatigue after an acquired brain injury to obtain positive results through enrollment in a live, interactive, online MBSR program. This is promising, as the Internet is accessible to many individuals, irrespective of where they live. Further randomized control studies comparing are warranted.

A scalable climate health justice assessment model
Publication date: May 2015 Source:Social Science & Medicine, Volume 133 Author(s): Yolanda J. McDonald , Sara E. Grineski , Timothy W. Collins , Young-An Kim This paper introduces a scalable “climate health justice” model for assessing and projecting incidence, treatment costs, and sociospatial disparities for diseases with well-documented climate change linkages. The model is designed to employ low-cost secondary data, and it is rooted in a perspective that merges normative environmental justice concerns with theoretical grounding in health inequalities. Since the model employs International Classification o...
