Prolyl Carboxypeptidase Activity Decline Correlates with Severity and Short-Term Outcome in Acute Ischemic Stroke.
Abstract Prolyl carboxypeptidase (PRCP) is an enzyme associated with cerebrovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity and hyperlipidemia. We aim to evaluate the relation between serum PRCP activity and severity, evolution and outcome of acute ischemic stroke. We used a specific RP-HPLC activity assay to measure PRCP activity in serum of 50 stroke patients at admission, and at 24 h, 72 h and 7 days after stroke onset to assess correlations with stroke severity based on the National Institutes of Health Stroke scale score (NIHSS), infarct volume on brain MRI scan, stroke outcome based...

Regulation of DAPK1 by Natural Products: An Important Target in Treatment of Stroke
Neurochem Res. 2022 Jun 8. doi: 10.1007/s11064-022-03628-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke is a sudden neurological disorder that occurs due to impaired blood flow to an area of the brain. Stroke can be caused by the blockage or rupture of a blood vessel in the brain, called ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke, respectively. Stroke is more common in men than women. Atrial fibrillation, hypertension, kidney disease, high cholesterol and lipids, genetic predisposition, inactivity, poor nutrition, diabetes mellitus, family history and smoking are factors that increase the risk of stroke. Restoring blood flow by repos...

Impact of risk factors for recurrence after the first ischemic stroke in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: Available online 16 October 2018Source: Journal of Clinical NeuroscienceAuthor(s): Shengbang Zheng, Baodong YaoAbstractRisk factors for first-ever stroke have been studied extensively, while those for recurrent stroke are not accurately understood. To provide the adequate secondary prevention for the patients, it is necessary to reveal the risk factors that dominate recurrent stroke. Multiple databases were adopted to search for the relevant studies and full-text articles involving in the risk factors for stroke recurrence were reviewed. Meta-analyses were performed with Review Manager 5.0 to estimate the...

Lipid-Modifying Therapies and Stroke Prevention
AbstractPurpose of ReviewWe reviewed lipid-modifying therapies and the risk of stroke and other cerebrovascular outcomes, with a focus on newer therapies.Recent FindingsStatins and ezetimibe reduce ischemic stroke risk without increasing hemorrhagic stroke risk. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors similarly reduce ischemic stroke risk in statin-treated patients with atherosclerosis without increasing hemorrhagic stroke, even with very low achieved low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Icosapent ethyl reduces the risk of total and first ischemic stroke in patients with established cardiova...

Macrophage –NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation Exacerbates Cardiac Dysfunction after Ischemic Stroke in a Mouse Model of Diabetes
In this study, we found that the cardiac dysfunction induced by ischemic stroke is more severe in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile, M1-polarized macrophage in filtration and NLRP3 inflammasome activation increased in the cardiac ventricle after diabetic stroke. Importantly, the NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitor CY-09 restored cardiac function, indicating that the M1-polarized macrophage–NLRP3 inflammasome activation is a pathway underlying the brain–heart interaction after diabetic stroke.

Association between gender and stoke recurrence in ischemic stroke patients with high-grade carotid artery stenosis
In conclusion, male gender is associated with increased risk of recurrent ischemic stroke in patients with high-grade ICA stenosis during 5-year follow-up. Further prospective trial to assess whether male gender may benefit from more aggressive vascular risk factors control and treatment strategies for stroke prevention is warranted.

Stress hyperglycemia is associated with in-hospital mortality in patients with diabetes and acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: The SHR may serve as an accessory parameter for the prognosis of patients with diabetes after acute ischemic stroke. Hyperglycemia in stroke patients with diabetes mellitus is associated with a higher risk of in-hospital death.PMID:35084107 | DOI:10.1111/cns.13764
