Comparative Bleeding Risk in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation with Cancer versus Without Cancer from Nationwide Prospective Cohort
This study aimed to clarify the differences in the bleeding risk in patients with AF with cancers and those without cancers during the long-term OAC.The CODE-AF prospective registry enrolled 5,902 consecutive patients treated for AF at 10 tertiary referral centers in Korea. Of the enrolled patients, 464 (7.8%) were diagnosed with cancers and were followed for all stroke and bleeding events (net composite events). The age, CHA2DS2-VASC, and HAS-BLED scores were similar between AF patients with and without cancers. Male population greatly comprised patients with AF with cancers. They were equally prescribed with direct OAC co...

High-Sensitivity C-reactive Protein and Intracranial Arterial Stenosis Predicted Recurrent Stroke and Dependence or Death in Minor Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack
CONCLUSION: Concomitant presence of increased hsCRP levels and ICAS was associated with increased risk of stroke recurrence and dependence or death in patients with minor ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack.PMID:37704441 | DOI:10.5551/jat.64229

Dual potential embolic source detected in left atrium during hyperacute stroke
Clinical introduction A woman in her late 60s with a medical history of hypertension presented to the emergency department with symptoms of a stroke which began 40 min prior. Brain MRI was performed (figure 1A). Hyperacute CT angiography of the head and neck did not find any atherosclerosis. ECG is shown (figure 1B), and subsequent transthoracic echocardiography showed left atrium enlargement and left-to-right flow at the region of the fossa ovalis (figure 1C). Figure 1Brain MRI of diffusion-weighted image sequence (A), ECG (B), and transthoracic echocardiogram (C). Question Which of the following is the most likely mechan...

Novel concept of less invasive concomitant surgical aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting avoiding full median sternotomy
AbstractIn the last decades, minimally invasive procedures have been developed in the therapy of aortic valve disorders. Recently, a novel concept of minimally invasive coronary revascularization in multivessel disease via left anterior mini-thoracotomy demonstrated promising results. Full median sternotomy, as a very invasive procedure, is the standard approach in concomitant surgical aortic valve replacement (sAVR) and coronary bypass grafting (CABG). The aim of our study was to show that the combination of minimal invasive aortic valve replacement via upper mini-sternotomy and coronary artery bypass grafting via left an...

Construction of a novel circRNA-miRNA-ferroptosis related mRNA network in ischemic stroke
Sci Rep. 2023 Sep 12;13(1):15077. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-41028-1.ABSTRACTMolecule alterations are important to explore the pathological mechanism of ischemic stroke (IS). Ferroptosis, a newly recognized type of regulated cell death, is related to IS. Identification of the interactions between circular RNA (circRNA), microRNA (miRNA) and ferroptosis related mRNA may be useful to understand the molecular mechanism of IS. The circRNA, miRNA and mRNA transcriptome data in IS, downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, was used for differential expression analysis. Ferroptosis related mRNAs were identified fro...

Vitamin E supplementation (alone or with other antioxidants) and stroke: a meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with vitamin E alone is not associated with stroke reduction. Instead, supplementation of vitamin E with other antioxidants reduces the incidence of ischemic stroke but increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke, cancelling any beneficial effect derived. Thus, vitamin E is not recommended in stroke prevention.SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: PROSPERO registration no. CRD42022258259.PMID:37698992 | DOI:10.1093/nutrit/nuad114

Implementation of Prevention Science to Eliminate Health Care Inequities in Achieving Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001171. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrevention of cardiovascular and related diseases is foundational to attaining ideal cardiovascular health to improve the overall health and well-being of individuals and communities. Social determinants of health and health care inequities adversely affect ideal cardiovascular health and prevention of disease. Achieving optimal cardiovascular health in an effective and equitable manner requires a coordinated multidisciplinary and multilayered approach. In this scientific statement, we examine barriers to ideal cardiovascular health ...
