Traditional and disease specific risk factors for cardiovascular events in ANCA-associated vasculitis: a multinational retrospective study
CONCLUSION: We showed that geographic region and both traditional and disease specific (kidney involvement in particular) factors were independently associated with CVE. Proper assessment and management of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors are essential for prevention of cardiovascular morbidity in AAV patients.PMID:36642436 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.220851

Cold Weather Can Be Dangerous for the Human Body. This Winter Worries Experts
A particularly nasty trifecta of influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is already portending a rough winter. But there’s another factor contributing to a potentially tough season for health: a colder-than-average season, which is forecast in the northern U.S. and the U.K. Even an ordinary cold season can pose a threat to human health and safety. One 2015 study published in the Lancet analyzed over 74 million deaths around the world found that more than 7% of deaths were attributed to exposure to cold temperatures. “There is conclusive evidence that there is increased risk for many health ou...

Application of Space Technologies Aimed at Proprioceptive Correction in Terrestrial Medicine in Russia
Space technologies greatly contributed not only to space medicine but also to terrestrial medicine, which actively involves these technologies in everyday practice. Based on the existing countermeasures, and due to similarities of sensorimotor alterations provoked by the weightlessness with various neurological disorders, a lot of work has been dedicated to adaptation and introduction of these countermeasures for rehabilitation of patients. Axial loading suit and mechanical stimulation of the soles’ support zones are used in mitigation of stroke and traumatic brain injury consequences. They are also applied for rehabilit...

From Rags to Riches: Power and progress in Abu Dhabi
The Ethiad TowersBy Jan LundiusSTOCKHOLM, Apr 20 2022 (IPS) I recently visited Abu Dhabi and my impressions became intermingled with worries about the war in Ukraine. I also happened to read Livy’s The Early History of Rome, written around the beginning of CE, coming across these lines: The study of history is the best medicine for a sick mind; for in history you have a record of the infinite variety of human experience plainly set out for all to see; and in that record you can find for yourself and your country both examples and warnings; fine things to take as models, base things, rotten through and through, to avoid....

The Informal International Network Getting Disabled Ukrainians Out of the War Zone
When Tanya Herasymova woke up on February 24 to the news that Russia had invaded Ukraine, her first thought was to get underground. If the Russian army began bombing her city Kamianske, close to the separatist region Donetsk, she would be at greater risk in her 4th floor apartment. But there was a problem: none of the city’s bomb shelters were accessible to wheelchair users, leaving Herasymova with nowhere to take cover. “It was a horrible feeling because I knew that I couldn’t go down there by myself. I can’t be alone, I need someone to help me,” Herasymova says. “I realized that the on...

Among total 9469 cases of CeVD, 2078 cases were strokes that included 262 hemorrhagic strokes (HS) and 1611 ischemic strokes (IS). Data evaluation was performed with categorical and dose-response analyses estimating the relative risk (RR) and excess relative risk (ERR) per unit cumulative liver absorbed do...
