Metabolic Syndrome in Polish Ischemic Stroke Patients
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) predisposes individuals to cardiovascular disease or stroke development. We aimed at evaluating the prevalence of MetS in a population of acute ischemic stroke (IS) patients from central Poland and at estimating the relationship between MetS and stroke risk.

Infections Diagnosed after Admission to a Stroke Unit and Their Impact on Hospital Mortality in Poland from 1995 to 2015
Implementation of modern stroke unit care might have attenuated the negative effect of infections on stroke outcome. Our aim was to investigate changes in the occurrence of pneumonia and urinary infections diagnosed after admission to experienced Polish stroke center between 1995 and 2015, and their association with hospital mortality.

Upstream Stimulating Factor 1 (USF-1) Gene Polymorphisms and the Risk, Symptoms, and Outcome of Pediatric Ischemic Stroke
Pediatric ischemic stroke is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. As previous studies of children after stroke showed, dyslipidemias were very common in Polish and other European populations. Thus, looking for genetic factors predisposing to pediatric stroke, its symptoms, and outcome, we have analyzed 2 polymorphisms of the upstream stimulating factor 1 (USF-1) gene.

Improvement of survival in Polish stroke patients is related to reduced stroke severity and better control of risk factors: the Krakow Stroke Database.
CONCLUSIONS: Reduced stroke severity is associated with better recognition and control of risk factors and explains the improvement of survival in Polish stroke patients. PMID: 27279847 [PubMed]

BOLD fMRI signal in stroke patients and its importance for prognosis in the subacute disease period – Preliminary report
Conclusion There are differences observed in the activation areas of the cerebral cortex both in the stroke and non-stroke hemispheres of the brain in stroke patients. More than half of the patients with hemispheric stroke but all with good outcome showed cerebellar activation. There was no clear correlation between the cortical activation pattern and the neurological status on the first day of stroke. There is probable positive correlation between the size of BOLD-signal in fMRI, young age, activation of supplementary motor area in stroke hemisphere and good functional status of patients in the subacute period of stroke.

Noninfectious complications of acute stroke and their impact on hospital mortality in patients admitted to a stroke unit in Warsaw from 1995 to 2015
Conclusions Over the last two decades Polish urban stroke units may have achieved a significant reduction of the occurrence of some noninfectious complications (i.e. MI, exacerbated CHF and DVT). However, the list of conditions associated with stroke unit mortality includes not only MI and exacerbated CHF but also PE, gastrointestinal bleeding and recurrent stroke.

Are Depression and Dementia a Common Problem for Stroke Older Adults? A Review of Chosen Epidemiological Studies
AbstractStroke is the second leading cause of death in the world. It is often associated with various long-term physical and neuropsychological consequences. The aim of this article is to present the results of research on the occurrence of dementia and post-stroke depression. Using the keywords: post-stroke dementia, post-stroke depression, post-stroke cognitive impairment, stroke, Polish and foreign bibliographic databases were searched: PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley, Google Scholar. Documents that met the eligibility criteria were selected for inclusion in this review. After the conducted analyses, 7 Polish articles and...

Post‐stroke epilepsy in Polish paediatric patients
AimThe aim of this study was to characterize a group of children with early and late remote seizures which occurred after arterial ischaemic stroke (AIS) and to find predictors of post‐stroke seizures. MethodThe study group, recruited in the Department of Neuropediatrics (Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland), comprised 78 patients who had had a stroke: 13 patients had early seizures occurring up to 7 days after the stroke, seven patients had late remote seizures occurring more than 7 days after the stroke, and 58 patients had no seizure. Univariate log‐rank tests and Cox proportional hazard models were us...
