Identification of Affective State Change in Adults With Aphasia Using Speech Acoustics.
Conclusions: The results suggest the existence of objectively measurable aspects of speech that may be used to identify changes in acute affect from adults with aphasia. This work is exploratory and hypothesis-generating; more work will be needed to make conclusive claims. Further work in this area could lead to automated tools to assist clinicians with their diagnoses of stress, depression, and other forms of affect in adults with aphasia. Preparing an E-learning-based Speech Therapy (EST) efficacy study: Identifying suitable outcome measures to detect within-subject changes of speech intelligibility in dysarthric speakers.
Abstract Abstract We explored the suitability of perceptual and acoustic outcome measures to prepare E-learning based Speech Therapy (EST) efficacy tests regarding speech intelligibility in dysarthric speakers. Eight speakers with stroke (n = 3), Parkinson's disease (n = 4) and traumatic brain injury (n = 1) participated in a 4 weeks EST trial. A repeated measures design was employed. Perceptual measures were (a) scale ratings for "ease of intelligibility" and "pleasantness" in continuous speech and (b) orthographic transcription scores of semantically unpredictable sentences. Acoustic measures were (c...

Temporal information processing as a basis for auditory comprehension: clinical evidence from aphasic patients.
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: These results provide further clinical evidence supporting the thesis that TIP constitutes the core process incorporated in both language and attentional resources. The novel value of the present study is the indication for the first time in Slavic language users a clear coexistence of the 'timing-auditory comprehension-attention' relationships. Save Time With These Tips for Making Documentation Easier
Speech-language pathologists have a pretty sweet gig, am I right? We get to spend our working hours immersed in myriad rewarding tasks like teaching new moms to safely feed their precious babies, helping families learn strategies to communicate with their children and helping people who have had a stroke regain their voices. And when our day of using our communication superpowers for the greater good is through? We get to sit in front of a computer for hours and write about it. Not in an “I love this work and want to chronicle my experiences” sort of way. More in a “this tedious, painstaking documentation somehow bec...

Prevalence of people who could benefit from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in the UK: determining the need.
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: To provide accurate figures on the potential need for and use of AAC, data need to be consistently and accurately recorded and regularly reviewed at a community level. The existing data suggest an urgent need for more accurate and up to date information to be captured about the need for AAC in the UK to provide better services and ensure access to AAC strategies, equipment and support. The Art of Communication
I recently traveled with my daughter, Hannah, on a class trip to China. We expected to visit and learn about the iconic landmarks on our itinerary—Great Wall of China, Forbidden City, Olympic Village. What we didn’t expect was to learn about speech-language pathology and rehabilitation during our tour. However, a visit to a clinic in Chengdu taught us that the field of speech-language pathology is relatively new to China. China only officially recognized communication disorders starting in 1980. The first speech-language pathology department was established in 1985 at Beijing’s Rehabilitation Center of China. The Chi...

Measuring Competency Development in Objective Evaluation of Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies
In conclusion, SLPs can reliably learn and incorporate objective VFSS measures within a reasonable time frame. Level of experience has limited influence on the learning curve.

Neurocognitive Recovery of Sentence Processing in Aphasia.
Conclusions Sentence processing treatment results in improved comprehension and production of complex syntactic structures in chronic agrammatism and generalization to less complex, linguistically related structures in chronic agrammatism. Patients also show treatment-induced shifts toward normal-like online sentence processing routines (based on eye movement data) and changes in neural recruitment patterns (based on functional neuroimaging), with posttreatment activation of regions overlapping with those within sentence processing and dorsal attention networks engaged by neurotypical adults performing the same task. These...

Investigating Attentional Allocation With Eye Tracking During Category Learning in People With Aphasia
In this study, no differences were observed between individuals with aphasia and control participants on behavioral measures of accuracy and response time, though accuracies overall were lower than those of prior studies examining this task in young adults. Eye gaze data demonstrated that over the course of training, controls and individuals with aphasia learned to reduce the number of looks to the feature of lowest diagnosticity, suggestive of optimized attentional allocation. Eye gaze patterns, however, did not show increased looking or look times to all features of highest diagnosticity, which has been seen in young adu...

Bilingual Abstract Semantic Associative Network Training (BAbSANT): A Polish-English case study
CONCLUSIONS: The discussion of the results of this case study is framed within previous work and theories of bilingualism. The lack of cross-language generalization when the weaker language was trained is discussed, taking into account nonverbal cognitive control deficits. In addition to showing the efficacy of BAbSANT, these results highlight the importance of considering cognitive control as a factor influencing therapeutic outcomes in anomia treatment in bilingual PWA.PMID:34364041 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcomdis.2021.106143

Applying adaptive distributed practice to self-managed computer-based anomia treatment: A single-case experimental design
CONCLUSIONS: These case studies suggest that adaptive distributed practice is an effective method for re-training more words than typically targeted in anomia treatment research (∼47 words on average per Snell et al., 2010). Generalization across experimental conditions provided evidence for improved lexical access beyond what could be attributed to simple stimulus-response mapping. These effects were obtained using free, open-source flashcard software in a clinically feasible, asynchronous format, thereby minimizing clinical implementation barriers. Larger-scale clinical trials are required to replicate and extend these...
