E-061 Glycoprotein inhibitors as a standalone post-thrombectomy rescue treatment for intracranial atherosclerotic disease-related stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionThese findings highlight the potential value of GPIs as a viable first line therapy for EVT rescue therapy in the setting of ICAD. This study was limited by the nature of the literature, which were non-randomized observational studies. Can Renal Denervation Reduce Heart Attack, Stroke and Death?
Renal denervation, a catheter-based procedure designed to lower blood pressure, has been the subject of much interest to the interventional community over the past couple of years. Although high blood pressure puts one in three adults worldwide at risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney failure, the renal denervation studies that have been conducted to date have looked only at reducing blood pressure rather than the overall impact on major cardiac events. St. Jude's (NYSE:STJ) announcement today of the EnligHTNment trial is the first that will look at "hard end points" such as heart attack, stroke and mortality.

The use of the heparin antagonist protamine after percutaneous intervention for carotid stenosis has been a topic of discussion in the literature as the safety of protamine after carotid angioplasty and stenting procedures has been called into question. Protamine sulfate is a cationic protein that binds with heparin to reverse the anticoagulant activity of unfractionated heparin. Study Published in The New England Journal of Medicine Finds Medtronic Insertable Cardiac Monitors Detect Atrial Fibrillation in Stroke Patients Better Than Standard Care
Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT), today announced results from the CRYSTAL AF (CRYptogenic STroke And underLying Atrial Fibrillation) Clinical Trial have been published in The New England Journal of Medicine. The Trial found that continuous cardiac monitoring with the Reveal® XT Insertable Cardiac Monitor (ICM) was superior to standard care at detecting atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients who have had strokes of undetermined causes (cryptogenic stroke).

O-034 Carotid Artery Angioplasty versus Stenting in Acute Ischemic Stroke
Conclusions This data suggest that patients undergoing angioplasty alone in the setting of acute internal carotid artery occlusion may have improved functional outcome at 90-day compared to those undergoing stenting. Medtronic plc (NYSE: MDT), today announced the results of a new "real-world" study of patients who have had a cryptogenic stroke (stroke of unknown cause), in which the Reveal LINQ™ Insertable Cardiac Monitor (ICM) detected atrial fibrillation in everyday practice at an even greater rate than that found in a recent, rigorously-conducted clinical trial (the CRYSTAL AF Study, which was published in The New England Journal of Medicine).

Carotid artery stenting in nonagenarians: are there benefits in surgically treating this high risk population?
Conclusions CAS in nonagenarian patients carried increased risk of perioperative ischemic events, compared with contemporary trial results in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Further, mean survival time postprocedure fell short of guidelines for receiving procedural benefit. Although larger scale multicenter research is needed, we recommend careful consideration of overall health status when contemplating stenting in nonagenarians.

EuroPCR 2015: Stroke risk clarified following routine clot removal after heart attack
(EuroPCR) Clearing blood clots from arteries during treatment for an acute myocardial infarction was a relatively common practice until a recent, large-scale study showed that the technique, known as thrombectomy, might actually increase the risk of stroke. Now, new insights from the TOTAL trial, presented here at EuroPCR 2015, indicate that the risk of stroke with thrombectomy during angioplasty, compared to angioplasty alone is evident very early following the procedure.

Thirty-Day Outcome of a Multicenter Registry Study of Stenting for Symptomatic Intracranial Artery Stenosis in China Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The short-term safety and efficacy of endovascular stenting for patients with severe symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis in China is acceptable. We aimed to evaluate whether speckle tracking echocardiography improves risk stratification for atrial fibrillation in these patients.
