Thrombectomy assisted by carotid stenting in acute ischemic stroke management: benefits and harms
This study assesses the benefits and harms of thrombectomy assisted by carotid stenting and identifies factors associated with clinical outcome and procedural complications. Retrospective single-center analysis of 47 consecutive stroke patients with carotid occlusion or high-grade stenosis and concomitant intracranial embolus treated between September 2011 and December 2014. Benefits included early improvement of stroke severity (NIHSS ≥ 10) or complete remission within 72 h and favorable long-term outcome (mRS ≤ 2). Harms included complications during and following EVT. Mean age was 64.3 years (standard deviatio...

Severity and outcomes according to stroke etiology in patients under 50 years of age with ischemic stroke
Abstract To analyze the association of stroke etiological subtypes with severity and outcomes at 3 and 12 months in patients ≤50 years. Observational study of patients admitted to a stroke unit (2007–2013). Variables: demographic data, vascular risk factors, comorbidities, severity on admission (NIHSS), and good functional outcome (mRS ≤ 1) at 3 and 12 months. We used multivariate analyses to evaluate the influence of stroke etiology on severity and outcomes. We included 214 patients, 58.3 % men, mean age 41.4 years. General linear models showed all etiologies were more severe than lacunar strokes (P...

Plasma miR-124-3p and miR-16 concentrations as prognostic markers in acute stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Plasma miR-124-3p and miR-16 are molecular markers which could be useful for the early prediction of mortality and mRS. PMID: 26968104 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Endovascular thrombectomy and medical therapy versus medical therapy alone in acute stroke: A randomized care trial
Conclusion A care trial was implemented to offer verifiable care to acute stroke patients. This approach offers a promising means to manage clinical dilemmas and guide uncertain practices.

Clinical outcomes of acute ischemic stroke patients treated by direct catheter-based trombectomy depending on their baseline characteristics
Conclusions Mechanical thrombectomy achieved better clinical results in younger patients, in smokers and in patients with stroke not caused by atrial fibrillation.

Results and functional outcomes of acute ischemic stroke patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy admitted to intensive care unit
Conclusions The factors relating to a worse functional outcome were symptomatic hemorrhage transformation, lack of recanalization and complications during EVT. The factors relating to mortality were symptomatic hemorrhage and hydrocephalus. Distal flow was achieve in most cases with a low complication rate. Half of the patients presented functional independence one year after the stroke.

Safety of urgent endarterectomy in acute non ‐disabling stroke patients with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis: an international multicenter study
ConclusionsOur findings highlight that urgent CEA performed within two days from the index event is related to a non ‐significant increase in the risk of peri‐procedural stroke. The safety of urgent CEA requires further evaluation in larger datasets. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Hochuekkito can Prevent the Colonization of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Upper Respiratory Tract of Acute Stroke Patients
Conclusion: Our results indicate that the administration of HET may contribute to the prevention of MRSA colonization and promote rehabilitation in stroke patients.

Prognosis associated with asymptomatic intracranial hemorrhage after acute ischemic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsOur results indicate that compared with patients without ICH, those who developed aICH during the acute stage of ischemic stroke had an increasing risk of worse outcome, especially in patients with endovascular therapy.

Endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke - Own experience.
CONCLUSION: Studies suggest that endovascular techniques are effective and safe in the treatment of ischemic stroke. Greater efficiency is characterized by intraarterial thrombolysis. Patients who were treated endovascular improved significantly. PMID: 25890921 [PubMed - in process]

Stent-based thrombectomy versus intravenous tissue plasminogen activator in acute ischaemic stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: Stentrievers can achieve a high rate of recanalisation and functional independence in acute ischaemic stroke and have a relatively good safety profile. Our meta-analysis demonstrates a clear benefit of an intra-arterial mechanical approach vs standard treatment. PMID: 26490828 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

First-line lesional aspiration in acute stroke thrombectomy using a novel intermediate catheter: Initial experiences with the SOFIA.
CONCLUSIONS: Lesional aspiration with SOFIA is in line with published data. The SOFIA may be used as a first-line device, aiming at fast recanalization by sole aspiration with good safety and efficacy. If unsuccessful, it converts into part of a stent retriever-based multimodality treatment. PMID: 26908589 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Women have a poorer very long-term functional outcome after stroke among adults aged 18–50 years: the FUTURE study
In conclusion, 14 years after an ischemic cerebrovascular event in young adults, one out of five IS survivors and one out of ten TIA survivors is still dependent in daily life, with a two to threefold higher risk of a poor outcome in women. This includes a period of life, during which important decisions regarding work and family life have to be made.
