Thrombolysis in Patients With Mild Stroke: Results From the Austrian Stroke Unit Registry Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In our study, intravenous rt-PA treatment was beneficial for patients with mild deficit. Given the observational nature of these results, our data might serve as an incentive for future randomized controlled trials to provide a basis for optimal patient selection.

Recommendations for the Management of Cerebral and Cerebellar Infarction With Swelling: A Statement for Healthcare Professionals From the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association AHA/ASA Scientific Statement
Conclusions— Swollen cerebral and cerebellar infarcts are critical conditions that warrant immediate, specialized neurointensive care and often neurosurgical intervention. Decompressive craniectomy is a necessary option in many patients. Selected patients may benefit greatly from such an approach, and although disabled, they may be functionally independent.

Evidence for Stroke Family Caregiver and Dyad Interventions: A Statement for Healthcare Professionals From the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association AHA/ASA Scientific Statement
Stroke is a leading cause of severe, long-term disability. Most stroke survivors are cared for in the home by a family caregiver. Caregiver stress is a leading cause of stroke survivor institutionalization, which results in significant costs to the healthcare system. Stroke family caregiver and dyad intervention studies have reported a variety of outcomes. A critical analysis of 17 caregiver intervention studies and 15 caregiver/stroke survivor dyad intervention studies was conducted to provide evidence-based recommendations for the implementation and future design of stroke family caregiver and dyad interventions.

Social Determinants of Stroke as Related to Stress at Work among Working Women: A Literature Review.
Authors: Toivanen S Abstract In adult life, many of the social determinants of health are connected to working life. Yet, our knowledge of the role of work-related factors for the risk of stroke is fairly limited. In contemporary occupational health research, the Demand-Control Model (DCM) is frequently used to measure work stress. Previous literature reviews of the association of work stress and cardiovascular disease (CVD) do not include stroke as a specific outcome. Results regarding work stress and the risk of CVD are less evident in working women. With the focus on working women, the purpose of the present pap...

A Long-Term Follow-Up Programme for Maintenance of Motor Function after Stroke: Protocol of the life after Stroke-The LAST Study.
Authors: Askim T, Langhammer B, Ihle-Hansen H, Magnussen J, Engstad T, Indredavik B Abstract Background. There are no evidence-based strategies that have been shown to be superior in maintaining motor function for months to years after the stroke. The LAST study therefore intends to assess the effect of a long-term follow-up program for stroke patients compared to standard care on function, disability and health. Design. This is a prospective, multi-site randomised controlled trial, with blinded assessment 18 months after inclusion. A total of 390 patients will be recruited and randomised to a control group, receiv...

Marked Regional Variation in Acute Stroke Treatment Among Medicare Beneficiaries Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— There is substantial regional variation in thrombolysis treatment. Future studies to determine features of high-performing thrombolysis treatment regions may identify opportunities to improve thrombolysis rates.

Prevalence of Depression Among Stroke Survivors: Racial-Ethnic Differences Brief Reports
Conclusions— This study reveals that latino stroke survivors have a significantly higher prevalence of depression compared with their non-latino counterparts.

Handwriting performance versus arm forward reach and grasp abilities among post-stroke patients, a case-control study.
CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the clinical observation that dexterity skills are more damaged than are arm forward reach after a stroke. However, these differences in motor performance were not significant in mildly disabled patients, demonstrating the feasibility of handwriting rehabilitation in these patients. Therefore, we modestly recommend focusing on handwriting rehabilitation of the hemiparetic upper extremity in mildly impaired patients after a stroke. The impact of lower extremity pain conditions on clinical variables and health-related quality of life in patients with stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Since lower extremity pain conditions have a significant important influence on clinical variables and health-related quality of life in stroke survivors, early identification and appropriate treatment of the lower extremity pain conditions should be carried out in order to reduce the level of disability in stroke patients. Exploratory factor analysis of the reintegration to normal living index in a stroke population.
CONCLUSIONS: Previous factor analyses on the RNLI utilizing general disability samples commonly report a two-factor solution. Our data support the presence of a single factor solution across the RNLI within a large sample comprised exclusively of stroke survivors. This suggests that the RNLI acts as more of a unitary measure of quality of life within a stroke sample relative to other disabled samples. PMID: 27486007 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Antiphosphatidylserine Antibodies and Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—We found that positive aPS increased risks of death or major disability at 3 months after an acute ischemic stroke, suggesting that aPS might be a prognostic marker for ischemic stroke.

Identification of the components associated with functioning using the international classification of functioning, disability and health comprehensive core set for stroke in Indian stroke survivors.
CONCLUSION: The results show a reduction in frequencies in ICF activities and participation categories corresponding to basic activities of daily living. Categories corresponding to employment and social integration showed little or no improvement. PMID: 28545344 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of a 12-month task-specific balance training on the balance status of stroke survivors with and without cognitive impairments in Selected Hospitals in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria.
CONCLUSIONS:  Within the groups, a 12-month TSBT intervention significantly improved balance control, respectively, but with broader effects in the CIG than NCIG. Importantly, though between-group comparison at baseline revealed significantly impaired balance control in the CIG than NCIG, these differences were not significant at the 8th month and non-existent at the 12th month of TSBT intervention. These results underscore the robustness of TSBT to evenly address specific balance deficits of stroke survivors with and without CI within a long-term rehabilitation plan as was hypothesized. Neurobehavioral disability in stroke patients during subacute inpatient rehabilitation: prevalence and biopsychosocial associations.
CONCLUSIONS: NBD is common within a subacute stroke inpatient population, particularly interpersonal and cognitive difficulties and preliminary analyses indicate associations with reduced functional ability, cognition and mood. There is a need to provide education and support to clinicians to facilitate routine assessment and management of NBD following stroke. PMID: 30213238 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
