Conclusion: In our sample, adherence to NOACs was associated with a reduction in stroke and DVTPE risk but did not substantially increase bleeding risk. Further studies with newer NOACs are warranted.

Abstract Systemic thrombolysis with recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA) remains the only effective and approved medical treatment of acute ischemic stroke. Several studies have demonstrated the importance of rapid recanalization. The efficacy of thrombectomy has so far not been sufficiently shown in randomized clinical trials; therefore, inclusion of suitable patients in one of the currently ongoing randomized trials is of great importance. From 'Sweet Clover Disease' to NOACs: A Historical Perspective on Oral Anticoagulation for Prevention of Cardioembolic Stroke (P2.397)

Rate of deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism during the care continuum in patients with acute ischemic stroke in the United States
Conclusions: Approximately 1% of patients with AIS experienced symptomatic in-hospital and/or post-discharge DVT/PE. Although 46% received prophylaxis in-hospital, only 6% received prophylaxis in the outpatient setting. This highlights the need for sustained thromboprophylaxis prescribing across the continuum of care.

Cause of Death and Predictors of All-Cause Mortality in Anticoagulated Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: Data From ROCKET AF Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology
Conclusions In a large population of patients anticoagulated for nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, 7 in 10 deaths were cardiovascular, whereas <1 in 10 deaths were caused by nonhemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism. Optimal prevention and treatment of heart failure, renal impairment, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes may improve survival. Selecting the right anticoagulant for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: Non-valvular AF patients on apixaban had lower rates of thromboembolic events than the patients on acenocumarol. This article will serve as a reminder of the positive health and financial outcomes of apixaban use, especially to those healthcare systems that are still oblivious to the decrease in economic burden and gain in quality-adjusted life years (QALY) by the long-term use of NOACS/ DOACS instead of the AVK anticoagulants.PMID:34286492 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202107_26241
