FDA strengthens warning that NSAIDs increase heart attack and stroke risk
Back in 2005, the FDA warned that taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen increased the risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Last week it took the unusual step of further strengthening this warning. This was done on the advice of an expert panel that reviewed new information about NSAIDs and their risks. Because NSAIDs are widely used, it’s important to be aware of downsides of taking an NSAID and to take steps to limit the risk. Many people take NSAIDs to relieve mild to moderate pain. These medications may be particularly effective in conditions in which pain results pri...

A Case of Fabry Disease Presenting with Young Stroke and Fever.
Authors: Wu LC, Chiang CT, Lee KF Abstract Although it is known that Fabry disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of young stroke and fever of unknown origin, it has not been reported in the literature of stroke with fever as the presentation of Fabry disease. This is relevant because stroke with fever may misguide the differential diagnosis. Here we present a young stroke patient with fever. DWI of brain MRI revealed acute multiple infarctions. Due to the fever, infectious and inflammatory origins such as infective endocarditis and autoimmune diseases were examined first. However, we could not id...

Acetaminophen Use and Risk of Myocardial Infarction and Stroke in a Hypertensive Cohort Epidemiology/Population
Recent data suggest that self-reported acetaminophen use is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events and that acetaminophen causes a modest blood pressure rise. There are no randomized trials or studies using verified prescription data of this relationship. We aimed to assess the relationship between verified acetaminophen prescription data and risk of myocardial infarction or stroke in patients with hypertension. We performed a retrospective data analysis using information contained within the UK Clinical Research Practice Datalink. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard r...

Continuous intravenous low-dose diclofenac sodium to control a central fever after ischemic stroke in the intensive care unit: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionsWe observed that a low-dose diclofenac sodium infusion was effective in treating fever without systemic side effects. This treatment may be suggested as an alternative to conventional antipyretic drugs, but additional clinical trials are required.
