Surveillance for Sickle Cell Disease - Sickle Cell Data Collection Program, Two States, 2004-2018
This report is the first comprehensive description of CDC's efforts in collaboration with participating states to establish, maintain, and expand SCD surveillance through the SCDC program to improve health outcomes for persons living with SCD. Findings from California and Georgia analyses highlighted a need for additional SCD specialty clinics. Despite different approaches, expansion of SCDC to multiple states was possible using standardized, rigorous methods developed across all participating states for reporting on disease prevalence, health care needs and use, and deaths.PUBLIC HEALTH ACTION: Findings from surveillance ...

Effect of pharmacologic anti-atherosclerotic therapy on carotid intraplaque neovascularization: a systematic review
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease is one of the leading causes of global mortality. It is a progressive inflammatory disease that involves lipid accumulation in the sub-intimal layer of the arterial wall, resulting in gradual plaque formation1. Plaque rupture is implicated in a large proportion of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including acute coronary syndrome and ischemic stroke. The presence of intraplaque neovascularization (IPN) in large arterial plaques have been associated with an increased risk of rupture and plaque vulnerability.

Spatial assessment of the attributable burden of disease due to transportation noise in England
CONCLUSION: Transportation noise exposures contribute to a significant and unequal environmental disease burden in England. Omitting minor roads from the noise exposure modelling leads to underestimation of the disease burden.PMID:37390771 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2023.107966

Interindividual variability and consistency of language mapping paradigms for presurgical use
Brain Lang. 2023 Jul 4;243:105299. doi: 10.1016/j.bandl.2023.105299. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMost functional MRI studies of language processing have focussed on group-level inference, but for clinical use, the aim is to predict outcomes at an individual patient level. This requires being able to identify atypical activation and understand how differences relate to language outcomes. A language mapping paradigm that selectively activates left hemisphere language regions in healthy individuals allows atypical activation in a patient to be more easily identified. We investigated the interindividual variability and consi...
