Characteristics and Outcomes Among Patients Transferred to a Regional Comprehensive Stroke Center for Tertiary Care Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Despite having more severe strokes on arrival at our hospital, transfer-in patients had similar in-hospital mortality versus front door patients and were more likely to be discharged to rehabilitation. These outcomes lend support to the concept of regionalized stroke care and concentrating patients who are more disabled at more advanced stroke care centers.

Long-term survival after ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation
Conclusions: Ischemic stroke approximately triples the mortality rate in patients with atrial fibrillation. This effect persists well beyond the immediate period poststroke and is strongly associated with disability after stroke. Stroke prevention by anticoagulation has even greater beneficial effects on survival than usually considered when focusing solely on 30-day mortality rates.

Incidence, Trends, and Predictors of Ischemic Stroke 30 Days After an Acute Myocardial Infarction Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The incidence of ischemic stroke within 30 days of an AMI has decreased during the period 1998 to 2008. This decrease is associated with increased use of acetylsalicylic acid, P2Y12 inhibitors, statins, and percutaneous coronary intervention.

Abstract 8: Association Between Hospital "Get With The Guidelines-Stroke" Performance Measures And Outcomes Among Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke In China Session Title: Concurrent I Session B: Oral Abstracts on Stroke Topics
Conclusions: A significant association between hospital care process and outcomes was found, supporting the use of GWTG-Stroke performance metrics as a means of assessing and helping improve stroke care quality in China.

Socioeconomic Position and Incidence of Ischemic Stroke in Denmark 2003-2012. A Nationwide Hospital-Based Study Stroke
Conclusions In Denmark, there is a strong relation between low socioeconomic position and risk for hospitalization for stroke. Lifestyle, as indicated by smoking, obesity, and alcohol consumption, and diabetes appears to increase the risk for stroke in people with lower socioeconomic position.

Socioeconomic deprivation and provision of acute and long-term care after stroke: the South London Stroke Register cohort study
Conclusions Stroke healthcare inequalities in England exist for some important indicators, although overall it has improved over time. The impact of SED may be stronger in black patients than in white patients. Further efforts are required to achieve stroke care equality.

Stroke and Major Bleeding Risk in Elderly Patients Aged >=75 Years With Atrial Fibrillation: The Loire Valley Atrial Fibrillation Project Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Elderly patients with AF have a higher risk of stroke and bleeding, but the benefits of VKA therapy for stroke/thromboembolism or mortality were present regardless of increasing age.

Antecedent Aspirin Use Is Associated with Less Severe Symptoms on Admission for Ischemic Stroke (P1.184)
Conclusions: Antecedent aspirin use was independently associated with milder AIS severity on presentation, even after accounting for acute infarct volume. While the underlying biology of this apparently protective relationship requires further study, patients at high risk of stroke may benefit from routine aspirin use.Disclosure: Dr. Nelson has nothing to disclose. Should Atrial Fibrillation Patients With Only 1 Nongender-Related CHA2DS2-VASc Risk Factor Be Anticoagulated? Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Among AF patients with 1 NGR stroke risk factor (ie, CHA2DS2-VASc 1 in males or 2 in females), OAC use as indicated according to the guidelines was associated with a positive net clinical benefit for the prevention of stroke and thromboembolic events.

No Decline in the Risk of Stroke Following Incident Atrial Fibrillation Since 2000 in the Community: A Concerning Trend Epidemiology
Conclusions Strokes/TIAs are frequent after AF, occurring in 10% of patients after 5 years of follow-up. The occurrence of stroke/TIA did not decline over the last decade, which may be influenced by a leveling off of anticoagulation use. This concerning trend has major public health implications.

High pro-BNP levels predict the occurrence of atrial fibrillation after cryptogenic stroke
Conclusions: Pro-BNP ≥360 pg/mL increases by 5-fold the possibility of detecting AF during follow-up in patients with cryptogenic stroke.

Impact of Atrial Fibrillation on Stroke-Related Healthcare Costs Stroke
Conclusion Stroke-related care for IS, HS, and TIA is costly, especially among individuals with AF. Reducing the risk of AF-related stroke is important from both clinical and economic standpoints.

Incidence and Cost of Stroke and Hemorrhage in Patients Diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation in France
Conclusions: The incidence and cost of hospitalization for hemorrhage should be considered in the global burden of AF. These data should be useful for pharmacoeconomic evaluation of new oral anticoagulant medications. Such real-world studies may be relevant for monitoring mid- to long-term morbidity and mortality in the AF population.

Summary of evidence-based guideline update: Prevention of stroke in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: Report of the Guideline Development Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology
Objective: To update the 1998 American Academy of Neurology practice parameter on stroke prevention in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). How often do various technologies identify previously undetected NVAF? Which therapies reduce ischemic stroke risk with the least risk of hemorrhage, including intracranial hemorrhage? The complete guideline on which this summary is based is available as an online data supplement to this article. Methods: Systematic literature review; modified Delphi process recommendation formulation. Major conclusions: In patients with recent cryptogenic stroke, cardiac rhythm monitoring probabl...

Stroke Risk Factors, Subtypes, and 30-Day Case Fatality in Abuja, Nigeria (P1.121)
CONCLUSIONS: Although hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and atrial fibrillation were important stroke risk factors, in many patients, these were detected only after a stroke. While the commonest stroke subtype was cerebral infarction, observed in almost two-third of patients, SAH was associated with the highest case-fatality rate at 30 days of 44.4%. Larger population-based studies are planned.Study Supported by: nilDisclosure: Dr. Bwala has nothing to disclose.
