Heart failure awareness survey in Germany: general knowledge on heart failure remains poor
ConclusionsWe found rather insufficient public knowledge on HF etiology and symptoms but especially about management, severity, and prognosis, which is essential for good self‐care and adherence of patients. Heart failure awareness has not improved even though awareness campaigns were held over the years. It seems that especially older patients should be much more approached by their family physicians.

Relationship between skeletal muscle mass and cardiac function during exercise in community ‐dwelling older adults
ConclusionsPeak VO2/HR, an index of stroke volume at peak exercise, was associated with SMI. This indicates that skeletal muscle mass might affect cardiac function during exercise.

Association between vitamin D deficiency and heart failure risk in the elderly
ConclusionsThere was a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly, and the evidence shows a strong association between vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of heart failure in this population.

Mitral valve pressure gradient after percutaneous mitral valve repair: every beat counts
Abstract A patient presented with symptoms of decompensated heart failure 2 months after percutaneous mitral valve (MV) repair. Echocardiography demonstrated impaired left ventricular function with elevated MV pressure gradients and pulmonary pressures during rapid atrial fibrillation. Heart rate control was achieved by implantation of a biventricular pacemaker with subsequent His‐bundle ablation because atrial fibrillation was refractory to medical treatment. During biventricular pacing at different rates (50–110 b.p.m.), heart rate correlated positively with both MV mean pressure gradient and global longitudinal st...

Identifying a low ‐flow phenotype in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: a secondary analysis of the RELAX trial
ConclusionsThere is heterogeneity in the resting SVI distribution among patients with stable HFpEF, with more than one ‐third of patients identified with the low‐flow HFpEF phenotype (SVI <  35 mL/m2). Lower SVI was independently associated with lower peak VO2, higher NT ‐proBNP levels, and greater decline in peak VO2. These findings highlight the potential prognostic utility of SVI assessment in the management of patients with HFpEF.

Accuracy of Doppler blood pressure measurement in continuous ‐flow left ventricular assist device patients
ConclusionsDoppler opening pressure should be the standard non ‐invasive method of BP measurement in CF‐VAD patients.

Impaired glucose tolerance and albuminuria in patients with chronic heart failure: a subanalysis of the SUPPORT trial
ConclusionsThese results indicate that IGT is associated with poor prognosis when complicated by albuminuria in CHF patients, demonstrating the importance of combined early stages of glucose intolerance and renal dysfunction in the management of CHF.

Pre ‐hospital management protocols and perceived difficulty in diagnosing acute heart failure
ConclusionsThe prevalence of AHF protocols is rather high but the contents seem to vary. Difficulty of diagnosing suspected AHF seems to be moderate compared with other pre ‐hospital conditions.

In ‐hospital ventricular arrhythmia in heart failure patients: 7 year follow‐up of the multi‐centric HEARTS registry
ConclusionsLower mean age of VA complicated HF patients is a matter of concern in the Saudi population. HF associated with VA increased in ‐hospital events and all‐cause mortality indicating poor prognosis and survival. These findings enable risk stratification and reflect on the importance of early recognition of the clinical markers and predictors of VA prompting immediate management.

Methamphetamine ‐related cardiovascular diseases
ConclusionsAwareness is needed as cardiac complications are important causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with MA consumption. Drug abstinence is the mainstay of therapy, cardiac and other complications should be treated according to the respective guidelines. Incompliance to therapy and frequent relapses are the main challenges for successful treatment. Further research is required to improve the understanding of this rapidly increasing cardiomyopathy.

Incidence, clinical characteristics, and risk factors of peripartum cardiomyopathy in Nigeria: results from the PEACE Registry
ConclusionsIn Nigeria, the burden of PPCM was greatest in the North –West zone, which has the highest known incidence. PPCM was predicted by sociodemographic factors and pre‐eclampsia, which should be considered in its control at population level. Postpartum customary birth practices and Hausa–Fulani ethnicity were not associated with PPCM in Nigeria.

Impact of diabetes on clinical outcome of patients with heart failure undergoing ICD and CRT procedures: results from the German Device Registry
ConclusionsThe overall risk of periprocedural complications and short ‐term (1 year) clinical outcome in patients with DM and HF undergoing ICD or CRT defibrillator (CRT‐D) implantation was not increased. In contrast, CKD was associated with an increased risk of 1 year MACCE in HF patients undergoing ICD/CRT‐D implantation.
