B ‐type natriuretic peptide is associated with post‐discharge stroke in hospitalized patients with heart failure
ConclusionsThe assessment of BNP may predict the occurrence of stroke in CHF patients used alone or in combination with established CHADS2 score.

Non ‐invasive telemedical care in heart failure patients and stroke: post hoc analysis of TIM‐HF and TIM‐HF2 trials
ConclusionsAnnual rate of ischaemic stroke/TIA in NYHA II/III patients is low but higher in those with elevated NT ‐proBNP levels and history of PAOD at baseline. NITC showed no impact on the stroke rate during 1 year follow‐up despite a significantly higher rate of newly detected AF. Irrespective of known CHF, echocardiography was often missing during in‐hospital diagnostic workup after acute stroke/TIA.

Trends, risk factors, and outcomes of post ‐operative stroke after heart transplantation: an analysis of the UNOS database
ConclusionsPost-operative stroke after HTx is infrequent but associated with higher mortality. Redo sternotomy, LVAD, and ECMO support at HTx are among the risk factors identified.

Ischemic stroke and heart failure: facts and numbers
Abstract Heart failure (HF) is pandemic in the modern society. Comorbidities of HF come increasingly to the fore in today's patient presentation and demand multidisciplinary treatment concepts. Ischemic stroke is a major comorbidity in HF patients and frequently contributes to the adverse outcome and functional dependency. Patients with HF are two‐fold to three‐fold more likely to suffer an ischemic stroke, have more than two times higher mortality and show worse functional outcome after stroke compared with non‐HF subjects. The risk of recurrent stroke is about two‐fold elevated in patients with HF. The risk of st...

Stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation and heart failure according to heart failure type
ConclusionsThe stroke/SE risk was the highest in the HFpEF group and comparable between the HFmrEF and HFrEF groups.

Early rehabilitation after stroke: relationship between the heart rate variability and functional outcome
ConclusionsThe presence of autonomic cardiovascular dysregulation in patients with subacute stroke was associated with adverse functional outcome after the early post ‐stroke rehabilitation.

Atrial fibrillation, anticoagulation management and risk of stroke in the Cardiomyopathy/Myocarditis registry of the EURObservational Research Programme of the European Society of Cardiology
ConclusionsThe study reveals a high prevalence and diverse distribution of AF in patients with cardiomyopathies, inadequate anticoagulation regimen, and high risk of stroke/TIA in this population.

Risk of stroke and bleeding in patients with heart failure and chronic kidney disease: a nationwide cohort study
ConclusionsCompared with patients without CKD, among incident heart failure patients without atrial fibrillation, CKD both with and without dialysis was associated with a higher rate of major bleeding and all‐cause death. Only CKD‐no RRT was associated with a higher rate of ischaemic stroke and intracranial bleeding.

Uric acid predicts mortality and ischaemic stroke in subjects with diastolic dysfunction: the Troms ø Study 1994–2013
ConclusionsIncreased uric acid was associated with higher all‐cause mortality risk in subjects with echocardiographic indices of diastolic dysfunction, and with higher ischaemic stroke risk in persons with severely enlarged left atria.

Evaluation of left ventricular function in patients with acute ischaemic stroke using cine cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging
ConclusionsCardiovascular MRI at 3  Tesla is an appropriate method for the evaluation of cardiac function in a selected cohort of patients with AIS. Systolic and diastolic dysfunction is frequent in these patients. CRT imaging allows reliable assessment of systolic and diastolic function.

Prevalence and determinants of systolic and diastolic cardiac dysfunction and heart failure in acute ischemic stroke patients: The SICFAIL study
ConclusionsA substantial proportion of the study population exhibited subclinical and clinical cardiac dysfunction. SICFAIL provides reliable data on prevalence and determinants of SD, DD, and clinically overt HF in patients with acute IS according to current guidelines, enabling further clarification of its aetiological and prognostic role.

High ward occupancy, bedspacing, and 60  day mortality for patients with myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure
ConclusionsPatients with heart failure had higher risk of admission to alternate wards when home ward occupancy was high. These patients may be negatively affected by full wards.

Stroke risk and atrial mechanical dysfunction in cardiac amyloidosis
We present a 42 ‐year‐old male patient with familial transthyretin amyloidosis who suffered an embolic stroke that originated from a left atrial appendage thrombus in the absence of any documented atrial fibrillation. This case highlights atrial mechanical dysfunction in patients with cardiac amyloidosis and th e need to better stratify thrombotic risk in this population with integration of echocardiographic parameters and transesophageal echocardiography.
