National registry‐based case–control study: comorbidity and stroke in young adults
ConclusionsIn addition to vascular risk factors, comorbidity (represented by ICD‐10 chapters) was associated with increased risk of stroke in young individuals. The risk of stroke was further increased with the number of diagnosed ICD‐10 chapters.

Very long-term mortality after ischemic stroke: : predictors of cardiovascular death.
This study shows that age, male gender, stroke severity, hemorrhagic stroke, diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and right hemispheric stroke are predictors associated with increased risk of long-term cardiovascular mortality. Neither atrial fibrillation, antihypertensive treatment on admission, smoking, or living alone was risk factors for late cardiovascular deaths. PMID: 23190295 [PubMed - in process]

Comparing ischaemic stroke in six European countries. The EuroHOPE register study (P1.068)
CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible to link population-wide register data among European countries to describe incidence of hospitalisations, treatment patterns, and case-fatality of ischaemic stroke on a national level. However, the coverage and validity of administrative register data for ischaemic stroke should be developed further, and population-based and clinical stroke registers created to allow better control of case-mix. Study Supported by: European Union 7th Framework Programme: European Health Care Outcomes, Performance and Efficiency (EuroHOPE), contract no. 241721.Disclosure: Dr. Malmivaara has nothing to disclose. Risk of ischemic stroke with the use of risperidone, quetiapine and olanzapine in elderly patients: a population-based, case-crossover study
We conducted a case-crossover study to evaluate the comparative risk of ischemic stroke associated with the use of risperidone, quetiapine and olanzapine in geriatric patients using the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database. Cases included elderly patients >64 years old who had experienced their first ischemic stroke (International Classification of Disease, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), I63) hospitalization from July 2005 to June 2006 and who had been without prior cerebrovascular diseases (ICD-10, I60–I69), or transient ischemic attack (ICD-10, G45). Exposures to risperidone, quetiapine and o...

Ranibizumab and Risk of Hospitalisation for Ischaemic Stroke and Myocardial Infarction in Patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Self-Controlled Case-Series Analysis
Conclusion This case-series analysis suggests an increased risk of hospitalisation for ischaemic stroke for patients receiving ranibizumab in the 31–60 days risk period. Studies with larger populations are required to confirm the risk in the 1–30 days risk period. No evidence of increased risk of hospitalisation for MI was observed.

Implementation of a Dedicated Cardiovascular and Stroke Unit in a Crowded Emergency Department of a Tertiary Public Hospital in Brazil: Effect on Mortality Rates / Implementación de una Unidad Destinada a Ictus y Patología Cardiovascular (Unidad Vascular) en un Servicio de Urgencias Saturado de un Hospital Público Terciario en Brasil: Impacto en los Porcentajes de Mortalidad
ConclusionsThe vascular unit strategy has the potential to reduce overall mortality for most acute vascular conditions.

Stroke is a brain disease
Although the title may seem as stating the obvious, the case has been far from that for the last six decades; if someone anywhere in the world had a stroke or a TIA, the WHO coding system places the event under either vascular diseases or episodic symptoms, not in the appropriate nervous system disease chapter of the ICD10. This situation started with ICD7 in 1955 and continued ever since, skewing all statistics produced by the WHO of neurological diseases. The ICD10 has been in use since 1990 and a total revamp is long overdue.

Abstract B84: Increasing disparities in breast cancer mortality for young black women in the U.S. from 1979-2010
Conclusions: Though mortality rates have declined over the past 30 years for women under 50, significant disparities in the two leading causes of death, cancer and CVD, remain. The persistence of disparities across diseases highlights the need to focus on improving health outcomes broadly, in addition to disease centered approaches, in order to prevent premature deaths among young women. The breast cancer mortality rate was two times greater among black women younger than 50 compared to white women, indicating a more profound disparity in younger women than older women. Furthermore, while relative disparities have decrease...

Comorbidity profile in dementia with Lewy bodies versus Alzheimer’s disease: a linkage study between the Swedish Dementia Registry and the Swedish National Patient Registry
Conclusions: Our study indicated a worse comorbidity profile in DLB patients with higher occurrence of depression, stroke and migraine compared with the AD group. Deeper knowledge about the underlying mechanisms of these associations is needed to explore possible reasons for the different pattern of comorbidity profile in DLB compared to AD and their prognostic significance.

Question Question: How effective and safe are cholinesterase inhibitors for mild cognitive impairment? Outcomes: Progression to dementia or Alzheimer's disease (National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke and the Alzheimer's disease and Related Disorders Association (NINDS-ARDRA), International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV criteria), dementia with Lewy bodies or vascular dementia (consensus criteria) at 12, 24 and 36 months and adverse events.
