Socio‐Economic Factors Relating to Diabetes and its Management in India
Abstract Diabetes is an escalating problem in India and has major socio‐economic dimensions. Rapid dietary changes coupled with decreased level of physical activity have resulted in increasing obesity and diabetes in rural and semi‐urban areas and in urban based people living in resettlement colonies. Increasing risk has also been recorded in those who suffered from poor childhood nutrition, and in rural‐to‐urban migrants. Social inequity manifests in disparities in socio‐economic strata (SES), place of residence, education, gender, level of awareness and affect prevention, care and management. All these populati...

Medicare beneficiary out-of-pocket spending for stroke prevention in non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation: a budget analysis
Healthcare costs today are increasingly being shifted from payers to patients, yet few providers factor patient costs into treatment decisions. Recent advancements in stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF) have resulted in new treatment options where previously there were few. While the clinical benefit and cost effectiveness of these treatments are supported by a growing body of evidence, the cost impact to patients has not been explored. This analysis sought to quantify patient out-of-pocket costs for three stroke prevention strategies: warfarin, dabigatran and left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) with the Watchman Device.

Budget Impact Analysis of Botulinum Toxin A Therapy For Upper Limb Spasticity In Hong Kong
Upper limb spasticity (ULS) secondary to stroke has a considerable patient and caregiver burden, particularly with regards to pain, activities of daily living and mobility. Botulinum neurotoxin-A (BoNT-A) injections are effective in treating ULS. We aimed to calculate annual cost per-patient basis and the expected overall annual budget impact in Hong Kong using static and dynamic market share scenarios.

Work Wellness Programs May Soon Include Genetic Testing
Your employer may one day help determine if your genes are why your jeans have become too snug. Big companies are considering blending genetic testing with coaching on nutrition and exercise to help workers lose weight and improve their health before serious conditions like diabetes or heart disease develop. It's a step beyond the typical corporate wellness programs that many companies are using to make workers more aware of their risk factors and improve their health. Genetic testing in corporate wellness programs also is relatively uncharted territory. Many employers and insurers cover these tests and counseling for med...

APSC2015-1220 Budget Impact of Ticagrelor as Compared to Older Oral Anti-Platelet Drugs: An Indian Perspective
Ticagrelor is a P2Y12 inhibitor indicated to reduce the rate of thrombotic cardiovascular (CV) events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). In PLATO study, Ticagrelor has shown to reduce the rate of a combined endpoint of CV death, MI or stroke, rate of stent thrombosis compared to clopidogrel. As of Clopidogrel, the price of Ticagrelor is higher, but the benefits derived are significant. There is a need for budget impact analysis of Ticagrelor comparing with Clopidogrel in developing countries like India.

The global impact of non-communicable diseases on healthcare spending and national income: a systematic review
Abstract The impact of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in populations extends beyond ill-health and mortality with large financial consequences. To systematically review and meta-analyze studies evaluating the impact of NCDs (including coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cancer (lung, colon, cervical and breast), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic kidney disease) at the macro-economic level: healthcare spending and national income. Medical databases (Medline, Embase and Google Scholar) up to November 6th 2014. For further identification of suitable studies, we searched refere...

5 Healthy Eating Habits To Adopt This Year
By Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD Nutrition is a hot topic these days, yet many of my clients still struggle with consistently following through with "the basics," and the stats show that missing the mark on many healthy habits is the norm. For example, the median daily intake of produce for U.S. adults is 1.1 servings of fruit and 1.6 servings of veggies, far below the minimum recommended five daily servings. If you're going to set just one goal for 2015, I think eating more produce should be it, but I've also listed four others below. I know you've heard them before, but they are without a doubt the most tried-and-true, impactf...

Pizza Hut's Pizza Is Saltier In America Than Anywhere Else In The World
America, we've got a salt problem. This year, the CDC reported that nine out of 10 kids in the U.S. consume too much salt. This is not because children are latched on to the salt shaker, but rather the foods they most commonly eat (like pizza, burgers, meats and cheeses) are already laden with the stuff. American adults have not grown out of the habit. The FDA recommends the average American consumes no more than 2,300 mg of salt per day, but the average American ingests about 1,000 mg over budget. It seems limiting our salt consumption may be easier said than done. A recent international survey released by World Action...

Estimation of Costs Associated With Stroke In Diabetic Patients in Madrid (Spain) Using A New Simulation Model
Diabetes (DM) has a relevant impact on health care budgets mainly due to its high prevalence and its chronic and acute complications. Isquemic stroke (IS) is one of the macrovascular complications associated with DM and its incidence increases with the presence of some risk factors such as hypertension and obesity.

The Move Towards Full Implementation Of The Nice Guidelines For Stroke Prevention In Atrial Fibrillation: The Potential Cost And Clinical Impact
Updated treatment guidelines for atrial fibrillation (AF) have been released by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the United Kingdom and highlight a current shortfall in the prescribing of anticoagulants to patients with AF despite the importance of stroke prevention. A model was designed for use as a planning tool for Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) looking to budget for the future move towards full implementation of the NICE guidelines.

Renal Denervation With The Symplicity Catheter System For Treatment-Resistant Hypertension: A Budget Impact Analysis
Renal denervation (RDN) is a new treatment option for patients with uncontrolled resistant hypertension. Studies have shown RDN to have a potential reduction in systolic blood pressure and therefore reduce risk for different cerebro-cardiovascular disease (stroke, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, etc. ). The aim is to assess the economic impact of renal denervation in resistant hypertensive patients based on the potential clinical benefit demonstrated in literature.

Budget Impact of Left Atrial Appendage Occulusion in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Contraindicated to Anticoagulation
Stroke is a leading public health problem in terms of mortality and economic burden in Korea. Anticoagulants are the mainstay for ischemic stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF), but many patients have contraindications to these drugs. A number of catheter-based left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) devices devised to eliminate the major cause of thromboembolism in AF patients have been commercialized in Europe but are not yet available in Korea. The purpose of this study is to perform a budget impact analysis of LAAO in patients with AF contraindicated to anticoagulation.
