An Association Between Herpes Zoster Vaccination and Stroke Reduction Among Elderly Individuals.
Authors: Klaric JS, Beltran TA, McClenathan BM Abstract Herpes zoster (HZ, shingles) affects individuals (60+ years) by reactivation of varicella virus from primary infection. Approximately one-third of the general population will develop HZ and are at increased risk of stroke. Our objective was describing possible associations between self-reported HZ vaccination and stroke with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System, a cross-sectional nationwide telephone survey. Non-institutionalized U.S. adults answered items concerning health risk behaviors. 2014 survey dat...

The relationship between herpes zoster and stroke.
Abstract Varicella zoster virus (VZV) infects >95 % of the world population. Typically, varicella (chickenpox) results from primary infection. The virus then becomes latent in ganglionic neurons along the entire neuraxis. In immunocompromised individuals, VZV reactivates and causes herpes zoster (shingles), pain, and rash in 1-2 dermatomes. Multiple case reports showed a link between stroke and zoster, and recent studies have emerged which reveal that VZV infection of the cerebral arteries directly causes pathological vascular remodeling and stroke (VZV vasculopathy). In the past few years, several large epide...

Zoster-associated Prothrombotic Plasma Exosomes and Increased Stroke Risk
J Infect Dis. 2022 Oct 6:jiac405. doi: 10.1093/infdis/jiac405. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerpes zoster (HZ, shingles) caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation increases stroke risk for up to one-year post-HZ. The underlying mechanisms are unclear, however, the development of stroke distant from the site of zoster (e.g. thoracic, lumbar, sacral) that can occur months after resolution of rash points to a long-lasting, virus-induced soluble factor(s) that can trigger thrombosis and/or vasculitis. Herein, we investigated the content and contributions of circulating plasma exosomes from HZ and non-HZ patient samp...

532 Shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) in post-stroke patients: Real-world evidence
Shingles, known as zoster or herpes zoster, is a neurotropic viral disease featured with painful dermatomal skin eruptions, which leads to a notorious complication, post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). PHN are usually refractory to treatment and disturbs patients' life. Among the world, stroke is a main cause of morbidity and mortality. Since patients are prone to get infectious diseases during acute phase following stroke, this study is aimed to investigate whether stroke increases the risk of shingles and it's terrible complication, PHN.

Shingles associated with short-term increased risk of stroke.
Authors: Abstract The varicella zoster virus causes varicella, or chickenpox, before becoming latent in neurones. As immunity decreases in older and immunocompromised individuals, the virus reactivates to produce herpes zoster, or shingles. More than 95% of the world's adult population is infected and up to one third will develop shingles in their lifetime. PMID: 27029983 [PubMed - in process]

Herpes Zoster and Long-Term Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
Conclusions HZ is associated with higher long-term risk of a major cardiovascular event. These findings suggest there are long-term implications of HZ and underscore the importance of prevention.PMID:36382961 | DOI:10.1161/JAHA.122.027451

Impact of influenza, herpes zoster, and pneumococcal vaccinations on the incidence of cardiovascular events in subjects aged over 65  years: a systematic review
Geroscience. 2023 Jun 3. doi: 10.1007/s11357-023-00807-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis systematic review aims to summarize the impact of vaccination against influenza, shingles, and pneumococcus on the incidence on the risk of cardiovascular events in the elderly. This protocol was developed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. We conducted a literature search and identified all relevant articles published regarding the matter up to September 2022. We retrieved 38 studies (influenza vaccine = 33, pneumococcal vaccine = 5, and zoster vaccine = 2). A total of 28 and 2 studies have shown that influenza and pneumococcal...
