Prolonged migraine aura resembling ischemic stroke following CoronaVac vaccination: an extended case series
We report 8 patients with focal neurological symptoms after receiving inactivated virus vaccine, CoronaVac.Case seriesPatients were aged 24 –48 years and 75% were female. Acute onset of focal neurological symptoms occurred within the first 24 h after vaccination in 75% and between 1-7d in 25%. All presented with lateralized sensory deficits, motor deficits, or both, of 2–14 day duration. Migraine headache occurred in half of t he patients. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain during and after the attacks did not demonstrate any abnormalities suggesting ischemic stroke. All patients showed moderately large regi...

Case Series of Thrombosis With Thrombocytopenia Syndrome After COVID-19 Vaccination-United States, December 2020 to August 2021
CONCLUSION: Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome is a rare but serious adverse event associated with Ad26.COV2.S vaccination. The different demographic characteristics of the 3 cases reported after mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines and the much lower reporting rate suggest that these cases represent a background rate.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.PMID:35038274 | DOI:10.7326/M21-4502

Neurological toll of COVID-19
AbstractThe first case of coronavirus illness was discovered in Wuhan, China, in January 2020 and quickly spread worldwide within the next couple of months. The condition was initially only linked with respiratory disorders. After the evolution of various variants of the SARS-CoV-2, the critical impact of the virus spread to multiple organs and soon, neurological disorder manifestations started to appear in the infected patients. The review is focused on the manifestation of various neurological disorders linked with both the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Disorders such as cytokine release syndrome,...

These Charts Show That COVID-19 is Still the Pandemic of the Unvaccinated
Over the summer of 2021, as the Delta variant swept the nation, Americans’ experience with COVID-19 bifurcated. Among vaccinated people, cases were low and deaths were rare; at the same time, people with no immunity were getting sick and dying at alarming rates. COVID-19 became the pandemic of the unvaccinated. Then in December, Omicron showed up. Cases have surged in recent weeks, blowing past records set during the Delta wave. Driving this trend is Omicron’s extremely high transmissibility, compounded by waning immunity among vaccinated people who are experiencing symptomatic breakthrough infections. With cas...

Recognizing Vaccine-Induced Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia
CONCLUSIONS: Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia is a serious complication of vaccination that is not feasible to anticipate or prevent. When the patient presents with sustained headache, neurologic symptoms/signs, abdominal pain, dyspnea, or limb pain/swelling beginning 5–30 days post vaccination, platelet count and d-dimer must be measured, and imaging for thrombosis performed. Confirmation of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia diagnosis should be ordered (platelet factor 4/polyanion enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; platelet factor 4–enhanced platelet activation testing) as treatm...

Background incidence rates of hospitalisations and emergency department visits for thromboembolic and coagulation disorders in Ontario, Canada for COVID-19 vaccine safety assessment: a population-based retrospective observational study
Conclusions Our estimated background rates help contextualise observed events of these potential adverse events of special interest and to detect potential safety signals related to COVID-19 vaccines.

Neurological disorders seen during second wave of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic from two tertiary care centers in central and Southern Kerala
Conclusion: During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, CAND and PVND have been emerging. Association of some of these may be fortuitous; however it is worth mentioning as pathogenic mechanisms of COVID-19 affecting various organ systems still remain unclear. Moreover, this may be helpful in future studies designing management options.

What should we do about vaccination of patients on anti-CD20 antibody therapy?
The SARS-CoV-2 antibody response was decreased in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) who were infected with COVID-19 and received anti-CD20 therapy Vaccination efforts for COVID-19 are currently underway worldwide. At present, there is insufficient evidence of the vaccine’s efficacy and safety in patients with neurological diseases, such as stroke, dementia and intractable neurological diseases. Despite the fact that many patients with neurological diseases are elderly and often have systemic complications, I believe that neurologists should nonetheless actively recommend vaccination to their patients. However, th...

Unexplained arterial thrombosis: approach to diagnosis and treatment
We present a structured approach to diagnosis with consideration of common causes, including atherosclerosis and embolism, as well as uncommon causes, including medications and substances, vascular and anatomic abnormalities, systemic disorders, and thrombophilias. We highlight areas of management that have evolved within the past 5 years, including the use of dual-pathway inhibition in atherosclerotic disease, antithrombotic therapy selection in embolic stroke of undetermined source and left ventricular thrombus, the role of closure of patent foramen ovale for secondary stroke prevention, and the thrombotic potential of c...
