Coagulation and hemorheology profile of patient with stroke and COVID-19: A case series during second wave pandemic
Clin Hemorheol Microcirc. 2022 Jul 7. doi: 10.3233/CH-221504. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn 2021 the delta variant was discovered, heralding the start of the second pandemic wave. This case series aims to analyse and compare the coagulation and hemorheology profiles of COVID-19 patients diagnosed with acute stroke during the pandemic's second wave and ascertain the effect on patient outcomes. This case series reports 4 cases with their respective characteristics. Case 1 reports on COVID-19 patients without comorbidities, Case 2 with comorbidities, Case 3 with strokes in young patients, and Case 4 with strokes in elderly...

Arterial Thrombotic Events in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients: A Short Review and Meta-Analysis
In conclusion, we found a non-negligible proportion of ATE in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Our results are similar to those found in hospitalized patients with influenza or with non-COVID viral pneumonia. Characteristics and comparisons of acute stroke in “recovered & quot; to “active COVID-19 and “pre-pandemic” in Qatar database
AbstractUnderstanding the relationship of COVID-19 to stroke is important. We compare characteristics of pre-pandemic stroke (PPS), cases in acute COVID infection (CS) and in patients who have recovered from COVID-19 infection (RCS). We interrogated the Qatar stroke database for all stroke admissions between Jan 2020 and Feb 2021 (PPS) to CS and RCS to determine how COVID-19 affected ischemic stroke sub-types, clinical course, and outcomes prior to, during and post-pandemic peak. There were 3264 cases admitted (pre-pandemic: 3111, stroke in COVID-19: 60 and recovered COVID-19 stroke: 93). Patients with CS were significantl...

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis
Semin Thromb Hemost DOI: 10.1055/s-0042-1742738Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare form of stroke that often affects younger age groups, especially reproductive age group females. CVT is a potentially fatal neurological condition that can be frequently overlooked due to the vague nature of its clinical and radiological presentation. Headache is the most common presenting symptom. However, a wide range of symptoms can be present and the symptom onset can be acute, subacute, or chronic. Neuroimaging is mandatory in cases where CVT is suspected. Both magnetic resonance venography and computed tomography venography can ...

Impact of COVID-19 on thrombus composition and response to thrombolysis: Insights from a monocentric cohort population of COVID-19 patients with acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSIONS: These results show that COVID-19 does not impact NETs content or worsen fibrinolysis resistance of AIS thrombi, a therapeutic hurdle that could be overcome by DNase 1 even in the context of SARS-Cov-2 infection.PMID:35032088 | DOI:10.1111/jth.15646

Thrombogenicity markers for early diagnosis and prognosis in COVID-19: a change from the current paradigm?
Standard biomarkers have been widely used for COVID-19 diagnosis and prognosis. We hypothesize that thrombogenicity metrics measured by thromboelastography will provide better diagnostic and prognostic utility versus standard biomarkers in COVID-19 positive patients. In this observational prospective study, we included 119 hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients and 15 COVID-19 negative patients. On admission, we measured standard biomarkers and thrombogenicity using a novel thromboelastography assay (TEG-6s). In-hospital all-cause death and thrombotic occurrences (thromboembolism, myocardial infarction and stroke) were re...

2021 Focused Update Consensus Guidelines of the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society on Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation: Executive Summary
Thromb Haemost. 2021 Nov 13. doi: 10.1055/s-0041-1739411. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe consensus of the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS) on stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF) has been published in 2017 which provided useful clinical guidance for cardiologists, neurologists, geriatricians, and general practitioners in the Asia-Pacific region. In these years, many important new data regarding stroke prevention in AF were reported. The practice guidelines subcommittee members comprehensively reviewed updated information on stroke prevention in AF, and summarized them in this 2021 focused update of the...

Platelets and COVID-19
Hamostaseologie. 2021 Oct;41(5):379-385. doi: 10.1055/a-1581-4355. Epub 2021 Oct 25.ABSTRACTIn 2019 first reports about a new human coronavirus emerged, which causes common cold symptoms as well as acute respiratory distress syndrome. The virus was identified as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and severe thrombotic events including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and microthrombi emerged as additional symptoms. Heart failure, myocardial infarction, myocarditis, and stroke have also been observed. As main mediator of thrombus formation, platelets became one of the key aspects in SARS-C...
