A tale of two cities: A retrospective observational cohort study of the impact of COVID-19 on acute stroke presentation, timing, and outcomes

Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke Among Critically Ill Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019: An International Multicenter Coronavirus Disease 2019 Critical Care Consortium Study*
CONCLUSIONS: In an international registry of ICU patients with coronavirus disease 2019, stroke was infrequent. Hemorrhagic stroke, but not ischemic stroke, was associated with increased mortality. Further, both hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke were associated with traditional vascular risk factors. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation use was strongly associated with both stroke and death.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Acute Stroke Admissions and Outcomes in a Philippine Tertiary Hospital
CONCLUSIONS: There was reduction in total stroke admissions, mild and transient stroke during the pandemic. There was significantly higher proportion of stroke patients having moderate and severe stroke. The discharge outcome of stroke patients is functionally poorer during the pandemic and more stroke patients have died compared to before COVID-19 pandemic. keywords: Stroke, Philippines, COVID-19, acute stroke

Croatian study on COVID-19-positive stroke patients during the second wave of the pandemic
CONCLUSION: Ischemic stroke after COVID-19 differs in etiology from ischemic stroke complicated by COVID-19 infection. Both patient groups are characterized by severe disability and high mortality. Raising the awareness of prehospital stroke and optimization of clinical workflow are important if we want to improve the stroke outcomes by acute recanalization techniques.PMID:36325667
