Successful Endovascular Therapy in COVID-19 Associated Pediatric Ischemic Stroke
Cerebrovascular diseases attributed to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are uncommon but can result in devastating outcomes. Pediatric acute ischemic strokes are themselves rare and with very few large vessel occlusion related acute ischemic strokes attributed to COVID-19 described in the literature as of date. COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to acute stroke care delays across the world and with pediatric endovascular therapy still in its infancy, it poses a great challenge in facilitating good outcomes in children presenting with acute ischemic strokes in the setting of COVID-19.

Hospitalizations for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and transient ischemic attack (TIA) decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. We compared the quality of care and outcomes for patients with AIS/TIA before vs. during the COVID-19 pandemic across the United States Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system.

The mucormycosis and Stroke: the learning curve during the second COVID-19 pandemic
Background The Angio-invasive Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) producing strokes is a less explored entity. Our hospital, a stroke-ready one, had an opportunity to manage mucormycosis when it was identified as the nodal center for mucormycosis management. We are sharing our experiences and mistakes in managing the cerebrovascular manifestations of ROCM.Methods We conducted a prospective observational study during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic from 1st May 2021 to 30th September 2021, where consecutive patients aged more than 18 years with microbiologically confirmed cases of ROCM were included.

In the Philippines, the mortality from stroke during the last 10 years remains high. This paper aims to describe the gaps in stroke care and the development of stroke systems of care in the Philippines. Gaps in stroke systems of care include low number of neurologist, inadequate CT scan machines, lack of stroke training among health workers, lack of stroke protocols and pathways, poor community stroke awareness, low government insurance coverage with high out of pocket medical expenses, lack of infrastructure for EMS, inadequate acute stroke ready hospitals, stroke units and rehabilitation facilities. Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Acute Stroke Admissions and Outcomes in a Philippine Tertiary Hospital
CONCLUSIONS: There was reduction in total stroke admissions, mild and transient stroke during the pandemic. There was significantly higher proportion of stroke patients having moderate and severe stroke. The discharge outcome of stroke patients is functionally poorer during the pandemic and more stroke patients have died compared to before COVID-19 pandemic.

Croatian study on COVID-19-positive stroke patients during the second wave of the pandemic
CONCLUSION: Ischemic stroke after COVID-19 differs in etiology from ischemic stroke complicated by COVID-19 infection. Both patient groups are characterized by severe disability and high mortality. Raising the awareness of prehospital stroke and optimization of clinical workflow are important if we want to improve the stroke outcomes by acute recanalization techniques.PMID:36325667
