Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stroke epidemiology and clinical stroke practice in the US
: To examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stroke, the number of stroke patients, time since last known well (LKW), morbidity, and mortality of stroke patients in Southwest Healthcare System (SHS), California (CA) and the United States (US) were analyzed during 2019 and compared to 2020. Our hypothesis is that there are regional differences in stroke outcome depending on location during the COVID-19 study period which influences stroke epidemiology and clinical stroke practice.

Clinical Outcomes and Costs of Recurrent Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review
Stroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide1 associated with significant healthcare costs.2 The burden of stroke is frequently reported as the incidence of first-event stroke, but the prevalence of total stroke events, including recurrent stroke, more accurately reflects the true burden.3,4 Nearly 30% of all strokes are recurrent events, and the risk is highest in the period immediately following a stroke.5 In particular, patients who have suffered an ischemic stroke are at a higher risk of experiencing one or more subsequent strokes.

Association between physical activity levels and depressive symptoms in patients with minor ischemic stroke
Post-stroke depression (PSD) in stroke patients is a serious sequela. The incidence of depression in stroke patients is approximately 22% –35%.1,2 PSD is associated with serious outcomes, leading to increased risk of mortality and reduced quality of life.3 In addition, a previous study investigating the association between depression and stroke recurrence in ischemic stroke (IS) patients reported that post-IS depression is an indepe ndent risk factor for stroke recurrence.4 Thus, prevention of PSD is important, as this could lead to further adverse functional outcomes after stroke.

Less is more - The Finnish Prehospital Stroke Scale prospective validation
The current bifurcation of the acute stroke care pathway requires prehospital separation of strokes caused by large vessel occlusion. The first four binary items of the Finnish Prehospital Stroke Scale (FPSS) identify stroke in general, while the fifth binary item alone identifies stroke due to large vessel occlusion. The straightforward design is both easy for paramedics and statistically beneficial. We implemented FPSS based Western Finland Stroke Triage Plan, including medical districts of a comprehensive stroke center and four primary stroke centers.

Globally, there are estimated to be almost 25.7 million stroke survivors, and stroke is the third most common cause of disability worldwide.1 The impact of stroke is sudden, and can be devastating and life-changing.2 A stroke can result in a range of short and long-term physical, psychological and social problems for survivors.3 –6 Stroke survivors’ needs can present at different times post-stroke and differ between individuals. Evidence suggests that, long-term, stroke survivors’ needs are often inadequately met.

Post-stroke pneumonia: Factors associated with readmission within 90 days of stroke discharge
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability within the United States.1,2 On average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds and accounts for approximately 1 in every 19 deaths.2 The prevalence of stroke is projected to increase by 20.5% from 2012 to 2030.2 Post-stroke complications are prevalent; infection occurs among 30% of acute cases.3 Pneumonia is one of the most common post-stroke infections and is associated with increased morbidity.4,5 Moreover, pneumonia is recognized as an independent risk factor for stroke-related mortality.

Tissue Plasminogen Activator Thrombolytic Therapy for Acute Ischemic Stroke in 4 Hospital Groups in Japan

Survival and Differentiation of Transplanted Neural Stem Cells Derived from Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells in A Rat Stroke Model
Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first report of transplantation of NSCs derived from human iPSCs in a stroke model. Human iPSC-derived NSCs survived in the postischemic rat brain and appeared to differentiate, primarily into neurons. This cell transplantation approach for stroke appears to be feasible, but further optimization is needed.

Remote Assessment of Stroke Using the iPhone 4
This study demonstrates the efficacy of using the relatively inexpensive iPhone 4 in telestroke management. Twenty patients with stroke were assessed at the bedside using an iPhone 4, and each examination was directed remotely on another iPhone 4.
