Patient and physician factors associated with pulmonary function testing for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd): a population study.
CONCLUSION Only about one third of individuals with COPD in Ontario, Canada received pulmonary function testing to confirm their diagnosis; age, comorbidity and physician factors appear to influence its use. Targeted strategies that address these factors could increase the rate of appropriate testing of people with suspected COPD and improve quality of COPD care. Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations.
Abstract Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are abnormal vascular structures that most often connect a pulmonary artery to a pulmonary vein, bypassing the normal pulmonary capillary bed and resulting in an intrapulmonary right-to-left shunt. As a consequence, patients with PAVM can have hypoxemia and paradoxical embolization complications, including stroke and brain abscess. PAVMs may be single or multiple, unilateral or bilateral, and simple or complex. Most PAVMs are hereditary and occur in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, an autosomal dominant vascular disorder, and screening for PAVM is indica...

β-trace protein and prognosis in anticoagulated patients with atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS. We suggest that BTP, a proposed renal damage biomarker, may be a novel predictor of adverse cardiovascular events, major bleeding and mortality in patients with AF. BTP may help refine clinical risk stratification in these patients. PMID: 23975142 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk of serious atrial fibrillation and stroke with use of bisphosphonates: Evidence from a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: Evidence from RCT's and observational studies suggests a significantly increased risk of atrial fibrillation requiring hospitalization, but no increase in risk of stroke or cardiovascular mortality with the use of bisphosphonate. PMID: 23722644 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cardiovascular Comorbidity in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Systematic Literature Review.
CONCLUSIONS: Available observational data supports the hypothesis that COPD is associated with an increased risk of CVD. PMID: 23722528 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Percent emphysema and right ventricular structure and function: The MESA Lung and MESA-RV Studies.
CONCLUSIONS: Percent emphysema was associated with smaller RV volumes and lower mass. The relationship of emphysema to cardiac function is complex but likely involves increased pulmonary vascular resistance predominantly with reduced cardiac output, pulmonary hyperinflation, and accelerated cardiopulmonary aging. Grade of pulmonary right-to-left shunt on contrast echocardiography and cerebral complications; a striking association.
CONCLUSION: Pulmonary RLS grade on TTCE is strongly associated with the prevalence of cerebral complications in patients screened for HHT. PMID: 23429940 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cardiovascular Safety In Patients Receiving Roflumilast for the Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
CONCLUSIONS A lower rate of CV events was observed on roflumilast compared to placebo in patients with COPD, indicating the lack of a CV safety signal when treating patients with COPD. Potential CV benefits of roflumilast should be evaluated in future controlled clinical trials. PMID: 23412642 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
