The feasibility and effectiveness of using prism adaptation to treat motor and spatial dysfunction in stroke survivors with multiple incidents of stroke.
Conclusion PAT is a feasible treatment for stroke survivors with multiple strokes. PAT did improve spatial neglect function more than standard care, only at one level of analysis of standard paper and pencil measures. Further research is necessary. PMID: 29458299 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Fear of falling in acute stroke: The Fall Study of Gothenburg (FallsGOT).
Conclusions Our findings provide valuable insight for those involved in stroke rehabilitation during the acute phase after stroke. FoF is associated with poor postural control, female sex and the use of a walking aid. PMID: 29493399 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Adherence of stroke patients with an online brain training program: the role of health professionals' support.
Conclusions The overall adherence of stroke patients with a brain training was low and there are some implications that systematic, regular interaction with a supervisor can increase training adherence of stroke patients with a restitution-focused intervention performed at home. Effects of a 12-month task-specific balance training on the balance status of stroke survivors with and without cognitive impairments in Selected Hospitals in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria.
CONCLUSIONS:  Within the groups, a 12-month TSBT intervention significantly improved balance control, respectively, but with broader effects in the CIG than NCIG. Importantly, though between-group comparison at baseline revealed significantly impaired balance control in the CIG than NCIG, these differences were not significant at the 8th month and non-existent at the 12th month of TSBT intervention. These results underscore the robustness of TSBT to evenly address specific balance deficits of stroke survivors with and without CI within a long-term rehabilitation plan as was hypothesized. A dance program to improve gait and balance in individuals with chronic stroke: a feasibility study.
Conclusions A dance program is safe and feasible post-stroke. Attendance and satisfaction were high and participants perceived walking and balance benefits. Future work will include a randomized controlled trial. PMID: 29745307 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Relation between health utility score and physical activity in community-dwelling ambulatory patients with stroke: a preliminary cross-sectional study.
Conclusions The present study showed that the health utility score correlated significantly with objective physical activity in community-dwelling ambulatory patients with stroke. The more the patients with stroke walked, the higher their health utility score was. Further studies should assess other domains of health-related quality of life to comprehensively verify this relationship. PMID: 30040601 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Pseudobulbar affect after stroke: a narrative review.
CONCLUSION: PBA remains an under-treated condition with significant psychosocial burden on both effected stroke survivors and their families. Advances have been made in developing consensus-based clinical diagnostic criteria for PBA. Early identification and prompt initiation of therapeutic measures are required in these stroke patients. Further research is needed to develop better PBA diagnostic criteria and more cost-effective therapeutic treatment options. PMID: 30213256 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Neurobehavioral disability in stroke patients during subacute inpatient rehabilitation: prevalence and biopsychosocial associations.
CONCLUSIONS: NBD is common within a subacute stroke inpatient population, particularly interpersonal and cognitive difficulties and preliminary analyses indicate associations with reduced functional ability, cognition and mood. There is a need to provide education and support to clinicians to facilitate routine assessment and management of NBD following stroke. PMID: 30213238 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Do functional hamstring to quadriceps ratio differ between men and women with and without stroke?
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that individuals affected by stroke had a higher FH/Q in the paretic limb compared to the non-dominant limb of the control group, for both men and women. One interesting finding was the absence of significant FH/Q differences between men and women with stroke. PMID: 30376444 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Characteristics of the shoulder in patients following acute stroke: a case series.
CONCLUSIONS: Given the severity of upper limb motor impairment, pain and reduced PROM were seen in a small number of participants. The clinical course of shoulder pain and PROM following stroke remains unclear. Large observational studies tracking shoulder characteristics from acute through to rehabilitation settings are needed. Differences in dietary recall and subjective physical functioning status in stroke survivors with self-reported cognitive impairment.
CONCLUSION: A lower intake of polyunsaturated fat and vitamin B6 may be associated with cognitive function, ultimately affecting physical functioning, post-stroke. It is possible that differing stroke severity and difficulty recalling dietary habits could have affected the present findings. Therefore, further research is needed to determine if interventions designed to modify polyunsaturated fat and vitamin B6 intakes are able to influence cognitive and physical function in stroke survivors with varying degrees of functional and cognitive deficits. Depressive symptoms in caregivers immediately after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Caregiver and stroke-survivor characteristics may help identify caregivers at highest risk for early depressive symptoms and guide interventions aimed at their resolution. PMID: 30929619 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Inter-rater reliability of the Swedish modified version of the Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients (SwePASS) in the acute phase after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The SwePASS shows an acceptable inter-rater reliability, albeit with potential for improvement. The reliability can be improved by a consensus how to interpret the scale between the raters prior to implementation in the clinic. PMID: 30983553 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Surviving a stroke in South Africa: outcomes of home-based care in a low-resource rural setting.
Conclusions: Clinical practice pathways and referral guidelines should be developed for the HCBC platform. Specific training of CHWs, focusing on how to educate, support and train family caregivers, provide assistive devices and refer to health services is needed. PMID: 31169468 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Non-pharmacological interventions for post-stroke emotionalism (PSE) within inpatient stroke settings: a theory of planned behavior survey.
Conclusions: Our survey data reveal that stroke clinicians report regular use of non-pharmacological interventions for PSE. There is a pressing need for well-conducted clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of these approaches. PMID: 31461389 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
