Saturated Fat Consumption and Risk of Coronary Heart Disease and Ischemic Stroke: A Science Update
At a workshop to update the science linking saturated fatty acid (SAFA) consumption with the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and ischemic stroke, invited participants presented data on the consumption and bioavailability of SAFA and their functions in the body and food technology. Epidemiological methods and outcomes were related to the association between SAFA consumption and disease events and mortality. Participants reviewed the effects of SAFA on CHD, causal risk factors, and surrogate risk markers. Higher intakes of SAFA were not associated with higher risks of CHD or stroke apparently, but studies did not take m...

Management of elderly people with Stroke: strategies based on action research.
Abstract OBJECTIVE: To elaborate and implement, through an educational intervention with the nursing team of the Emergency Unit, strategies that contribute to the management of elderly people suspected/affected by Stroke. METHOD: Action research with eighteen nursing professionals working in the Emergency Unit of a reference hospital. The data were collected through five pedagogical workshops and systematized through the thematic analysis. RESULTS: After a situational analysis and identification of the difficulties in the management of these elderly, a synthesis chart was prepared with strategic actions,...

Capacity-Building for Stroke Genomic Research Data Collection: The African Neurobiobank Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications Project Experience
Conclusion: Capacity-building is a necessary step toward ELSI-related genomic research implementation in African countries where scholarship of ELSI of genomics research is emerging. Our findings may be useful to the design and implementation of ELSI-GGR projects in other African countries.PMID:35759418 | DOI:10.1089/bio.2021.0144

Capacity building and stroke risk assessment in Nigerian children with sickle cell anaemia
ConclusionEffective capacity building of middle level manpower is feasible and can provide a credible TCD screening service to communities with a high demand and a shortage of trained professionals. The pattern of TCD abnormalities seen in Africa are comparable to those obtained in several previous worldwide reports. Pediatr Blood Cancer © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Therapeutic patient education and post-stroke cognitive-behavioral disorders: Inputs for patients, caregivers and professionals in rehabilitation units
Discussion – conclusion Participation and satisfaction rates for patients and caregivers show that TEP has met their expectations. A clear positioning is defined for the caregiver, target of TEP on CBD. Measured burden is low, but Zarit scale may reduce the objective component of burden. Awareness of CBD and decrease in anosognosia may explain the lack of improvement in the quality of life measured by EuroQol. TEP approach has changed professionals practice through their positioning in the patient-professional and caregiver-professional relationship and their collaboration between professionals. Our ultimate goal is to w...

The 10th Biennial Hatter Cardiovascular Institute workshop: cellular protection —evaluating new directions in the setting of myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke, and cardio-oncology
AbstractDue to its poor capacity for regeneration, the heart is particularly sensitive to the loss of contractile cardiomyocytes. The onslaught of damage caused by ischaemia and reperfusion, occurring during an acute myocardial infarction and the subsequent reperfusion therapy, can wipe out upwards of a billion cardiomyocytes. A similar program of cell death can cause the irreversible loss of neurons in ischaemic stroke. Similar pathways of lethal cell injury can contribute to other pathologies such as left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure caused by cancer therapy. Consequently, strategies designed to protect the ...

Development of a flexible rehabilitation concept for a neurological in-patient rehabilitation program after stroke.
CONCLUSION: The evidence-based and consensus-based concept is characterized by being individually and flexibly applicable to the individual patient. In this way, it meets the given demands and fulfils the requirements of a heterogeneous group of patients. It is intended to incorporate the treatment concept into the routine healthcare services offered by the AOK Baden-Württemberg. In addition, the treatment concept will be the basis for the development of performance-based remuneration. PMID: 31558374 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID): A report from the 2018 National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Workshop.
This report summarizes the discussion and recommendations from a working group convened by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to evaluate the state of the field in VCID research, identify research priorities, and foster collaborations. As discussed in this report, advances in understanding the biological mechanisms of VCID across the wide spectrum of pathologies, chronic systemic comorbidities, and other risk factors may lead to potential prevention and new treatment strategies to decrease the burden of dementia. Better understanding of the social d...
