In-hospital stroke and mortality trends after left ventricular assist device implantation in the United States from 2017 to 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Our study found a significant downtrend in the in-hospital mortality rates among patients with LVAD without substantial changes in stroke rate trends over the study timeframe. As stroke rates remained steady, we hypothesize that improved management along with better control of blood pressure, could have played an important role in survival benefit over the study time frame.PMID:37387231 | DOI:10.1177/03913988231183723

Economic and Societal Aspects of Stroke Management
Stroke is a major health burden worldwide with attendant mortality, morbidity, and cost. In 2010, there were approximately 16.9 million strokes and an estimated 33 million stroke survivors worldwide. Also, in the United States, stroke is the third leading cause of death, with ischemic stroke resulting in 8% 30-day mortality (20% for hemorrhagic stroke). The staggering economic cost of the disease is driven largely by disability and long term care. Efforts in stroke healthcare delivery are focusing on performance, efficiency and value to better serve the consumer.

Performance of the RACE Score for the Prehospital Identification of Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke in a Suburban/Rural EMS Service.
CONCLUSION: The RACE scale demonstrated acceptable discrimination, yet the sensitivity and positive predictive value were lower in this cohort of EMS professionals in the U.S. than in the original validation study conducted in Spain. Further work is needed to determine the optimal prehospital screening tool for identification of LVO.

Effect of Warfarin on Ischemic Stroke, Bleeding, and Mortality in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Receiving Peritoneal Dialysis
ConclusionThere is no significant association between warfarin treatment with risks of mortality, ischemic stroke or bleeding in patients with atrial fibrillation receiving peritoneal dialysis.

Predictors of 30-day hospital readmission after mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The study data demonstrate that hypertension, length of hospital stay, and hemorrhagic conversion were predictors of 30-day hospital readmission in stroke patients after mechanical thrombectomy. Infection was the most common cause of 30-day readmission, followed by cardiac and cerebrovascular diagnoses. These results therefore may serve to identify patients within the stroke population who require increased surveillance following discharge to reduce complications and unplanned readmissions.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in the United States.
