Long-term benefits of a new oral appliance on adult snoring: a trend analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We discovered that the LOA could reduce snoring rates and that the 2.5-cm compressor length in the LOA produced the best results.PMID:35386299 | PMC:PMC8977863 | DOI:10.4081/mrm.2022.824

Continuous positive pressure therapy usage and incident stroke in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: A nationwide population ‐ based cohort study
ConclusionsIt is possible that treatment with CPAP might be beneficial for protection against stroke, but this conclusion should be interpreted with caution. Future studies with satisfactory CPAP quality and duration are needed to validate this observation.

Mortality of cardiovascular events in COPD patients with preceding hospitalized acute exacerbation.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Acute exacerbation (AE) of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may be accompanied by the deterioration of cardiovascular comorbidities, as evidenced by the increased incidence of acute cardiovascular events. RESEARCH QUESTION: Whether preceding AE might be associated with mortality of cardiovascular events remains unknown. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a health insurance research database in Taiwan, we identified patients with COPD who experienced first-time acute myocardial infarction (AMI; n=26,442), ischemic stroke (n=54,959) and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH; n=14,893) ...

Comparing the Effectiveness and Safety of Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants and Warfarin in the Elderly Asian Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: A Nationwide Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to warfarin, NOACs were associated with a significantly lower risk of adverse events, with heterogeneity in treatment effects among different age strata. Overall, the clear safety signal in favor of NOACs over warfarin was evident irrespective of age strata, being most marked in the most elderly. PMID: 31809694 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effectiveness and Safety of Four Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Asians with Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: In the largest real-world practice study among Asians with NVAF, four DOACs were associated with lower risks of thromboembolism and bleeding than warfarin. There was consistency even amongst high risk subgroups and whether standard dose or low dose regimes were compared. PMID: 31103697 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Non-smoking COPD: an overlooked systemic disease, modifiable by physical activity based on studying a cohort of 386,304 subjects
Conclusions: Non-smoking COPD, a sizable majority among all COPDs in this Asian cohort, is a systemic disease with multi-system extra-pulmonary involvement. Their mortality risks disappeared in the long run by those COPDs engaged in regular exercise of at least 30 min/day of moderate intensity.

Long-term outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a 13-year nationwide cohort study
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with increased risk of coronary atherosclerosis. However, its impact on the long-term outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has not been described. Using the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, we identified 215275 adult patients who underwent first-time PCI between 2000 and 2012. Among them, the outcomes of patients with COPD (n = 24900) and without COPD (n = 190375) were compared. Baseline demographics and 13-year overall mortality and adverse cardiac outcomes after PCI (i.e., ischemic events, repeat revascula...

Lifetime Risks, Projected Numbers and Adverse Outcomes in Asian Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: A Report from the Taiwan Nationwide AF Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: The burden of AF amongst Asian patients is increasing, with a lifetime risk of AF being appropriately 1 in 7. Optimized management of any associated comorbidities should be part of the holistic management approach for AF. PMID: 29017957 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
