The association between self-perceived walking pace with the incidence of hypertension: the ‘Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra’ cohort
Conclusion: Our results support that an increase in walking pace, even slightly, is inversely associated with the development of hypertension, independent of total time spent walking and other factors associated with hypertension.

Leukotriene receptor antagonists role in recuding the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk: A case-control study in southern Spain
Background and Aims: Leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs) are used in asthmatic patients, however different studies indicate that LTRAs can decrease intimal hyperplasia after vascular injury, and have a protective role in cerebral ischemia. The aim of our study was to assess the role of LTRAs in reducing myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke (IS) risk in patients from two Primary Health Care Centers of Granada.

Impact of Life's Simple 7 on the incidence of major cardiovascular events in high-risk Spanish adults in the PREDIMED study cohort
ConclusionsIn an elderly Spanish population at high cardiovascular risk, better adherence to Life's Simple 7 metrics was progressively associated with a substantially lower rate of major cardiovascular events.

Reducing Hypertension in a Post-Stroke Black and Hispanic Homecare Population: Results of a Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial.
CONCLUSION: The significant across-the-board SBP decreases suggest that UHC nurse/patient/physician interactions were the central component of SBP reduction and that additional efforts to lower recurrent stroke risk should test incremental improvements in usual care, not resource-intensive transitional care interventions. They also suggest the potential value of pragmatic homecare programs as part of a broader strategy to overcome HTN treatment barriers and improve secondary stroke prevention globally. Cardiovascular Incomes In The Hypertensive And Diabetic Mediterranean Population Older Than 65 Years Old
Background and Aims: In Spain, hypertension and DM are major health problems. The importance of determining the CV risk associated with both is based on the evidence of simultaneous CV risk factors potentiate each other, giving rise to a total CV risk that is greater than the sum of its components. Our objective was to study the income from coronary heart disease, heart failure or stroke produced in these patients during follow-up.

Direct oral anticoagulants versus vitamin K antagonists in real-world patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. The FANTASIIA study
ConclusionsCompared with VKA, DOAC is associated with a trend to a lower incidence of all major events, including death, in patients with NVAF in Spain. Prevalence and Significance of Interatrial Block in Takotsubo Syndrome (From the RETAKO Registry)
Interatrial block (IAB) represents a conduction delay between right and left atria and is associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation and stroke. IAB has not been previously assessed in patients with Takotsubo syndrome (TS). Our aim was to describe the prevalence and prognostic significance of IAB in patients with TS. Data come from the Spanish National prospective registry of patients with definitive TS diagnosis. IAB was defined as a P-wave ≥ 120 milliseconds and was considered partial when the P-wave was positive in inferior leads and advanced when it was biphasic (+/-).

The Mediterranean Diet and Cardiovascular Health.
Abstract The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), abundant in minimally processed plant-based foods, rich in monounsaturated fat from olive oil, but lower in saturated fat, meats, and dairy products, seems an ideal nutritional model for cardiovascular health. Methodological aspects of Mediterranean intervention trials, limitations in the quality of some meta-analyses, and other issues may have raised recent controversies. It remains unclear whether such limitations are important enough as to attenuate the postulated cardiovascular benefits of the MedDiet. We aimed to critically review current evidence on the role of the ...

Health care cost analysis of enhanced pacing modalities in bradycardia patients: Portuguese case study on the results of the MINERVA trial
ConclusionThe combination of atrial preventive pacing, atrial antitachycardia pacing and an algorithm to minimize the detrimental effect of right ventricular pacing reduces recurrent and permanent AF. The new DDDRP + MVP pacing mode could contribute to significant costs savings in the Portuguese health care setting.

Patients ’ Priorities for Oral Anticoagulation Therapy in Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation: a Multi-criteria Decision Analysis
DiscussionAlthough the relative impact of convenience on therapy value is small, patients have different preferences for options within convenience criteria. Besides considerations on safety and effectiveness, physicians should also discuss attributes of convenience with patients, as it can be assumed that alignment to patient preferences in drug prescription and better patient education could result in higher adherence.
