Treatment with Uric Acid Reduces Infarct and Improves Neurologic Function in Female Mice After Transient Cerebral Ischemia
Exogenous administration of uric acid, a naturally occurring antioxidant that scavenges reactive oxygen species in vasculature, has shown protective efficacy in both rodent models of stroke and human stroke patients in Spain as an adjuvant treatment to mechanical thrombectomy. Before clinical trials can be initiated in the United States, however, confirmation of efficacy in alternative preclinical models is required in accordance with stroke therapy academic industry roundtable-RIGOR criteria. To date, preclinical efficacy has only been established in the acute setting in male rodents.

Determinants of Informal Care, Burden, and Risk of Burnout in Caregivers of Stroke Survivors Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—This study reveals the heavy burden borne by the caregivers of stroke survivors. Our analysis also identifies explanatory and predictive variables for the likelihood of receiving informal care, caregiver burden, and high risk of burnout.

Analysis of the direct costs associated with mechanical thrombectomy and intravenous fibrinolysis in the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias.
CONCLUSIONS: The mean cost of treatment with mechanical thrombectomy, as well as the total mean cost per patient during the acute phase of the disease associated with this technique, is higher than in the case of intravenous fibrinolysis. In our setting, both intravenous fibrinolysis and mechanical thrombectomy are considered to be effective and safe. PMID: 29251337 [PubMed - in process]

Translation into Spanish and a preliminary analysis of the psychometric properties of the Newcastle Stroke-Specific Quality of Life Measure (NEWSQOL) questionnaire for rating the quality of life among post-stroke patients.
CONCLUSION: The Spanish version of the NEWSQOL questionnaire is reliable for evaluating the quality of life in post-stroke patients, as well as being well accepted. The questionnaire must be used in more broader samples in order to evaluate its validity and sensitivity. PMID: 29178105 [PubMed - in process]

Stroke-related mortality in a tertiary care hospital in Andalusia: Analysis and reflections
Conclusions Stroke is associated with higher admission and in-hospital mortality rates than SCA. Likewise, patients with HS showed higher mortality rates than those with IS. Patients with fatal stroke usually had a history of long-term treatment with anticoagulants; two-thirds of the patients with fatal IS and AF were not receiving anticoagulants. According to our results, optimising prevention in patients with AF may have a positive impact on stroke-related in-hospital mortality.

Clinical profile and satisfaction with anticoagulated treatment in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation attended in Internal Medicine and Neurology departments of Spain.
CONCLUSIONS: Although there were some differences in the clinical profile of patients with atrial fibrillation attended in Neurology or Internal Medicine departments, all of them had many comorbidities and a high thromboembolic risk. Despite INR control was poor, the most common oral anticoagulant used were vitamin K antagonists. Satisfaction related to oral anticoagulation was high. PMID: 28990646 [PubMed - in process]

Commercial video games in the rehabilitation of patients with sub-acute stroke: a pilot study.
CONCLUSIONS: An interdisciplinary rehabilitation approach supplemented with semi-immersive virtual reality seems to be useful for improving balance and postural control, functional independence in basic activities of daily living, quality of life, as well as motivation and self-esteem, with excellent adherence. This intervention modality could be adopted as a therapeutic tool in neurological rehabilitation of stroke patients in subacute stage. PMID: 28990643 [PubMed - in process]

Effect of informed consent on patient characteristics in a stroke thrombolysis trial
Conclusions: Patients recruited by proxy consent were older, had more severe strokes, and had higher prevalence of aphasia than those with capacity to give personal consent. Variations in the manner of consent across countries may influence trial results. Biological age is better than chronological as predictor of 3-month outcome in ischemic stroke
Conclusions: B-age, estimated by DNA methylation, is an independent predictor of ischemic stroke outcome regardless of chronological years.

Comparison of the cost-utility of direct oral anticoagulants for the prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation in Spain.
CONCLUSIONS: All three direct anticoagulants are cost-effective against acenocoumarol. Dabigatran is economically dominant over rivaroxaban and apixaban in the Spanish setting, as it is more effective and cheaper. PMID: 28272725 [PubMed - in process]

Cognitive performance following lacunar stroke in Spanish‐speaking patients: results from the SPS3 trial
ConclusionsMild cognitive impairment in Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes Spanish‐speaking patients with recent lacunar stroke is highly prevalent but has a different pattern to that observed in English‐speaking patients. A combination of socio‐demographics, stroke biology, and stroke care may account for these differences.

Analysis of stroke care resources in Spain in 2012: Have we benefitted from the Spanish Health System's stroke care strategy?
Conclusion Stroke care has improved in terms of numbers of participating hospitals, the increased use of intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular procedures, and surgery for malignant MCA infarction. Implementation of SUs and telemedicine remain insufficient. The availability of diagnostic resources is good in most SUs and irregular in other hospitals. Regional governments should strive to ensure better care and territorial equality, which would achieve the EISNS objectives.
