Clinical Ageing
Subcell Biochem. 2023;103:437-458. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-26576-1_16.ABSTRACTAgeing is generally characterised by the declining ability to respond to stress, increasing homeostatic imbalance, and increased risk of ageing-associated diseases . Mechanistically, the lifelong accumulation of a wide range of molecular and cellular impairments leads to organismal senescence. The aging population poses a severe medical concern due to the burden it places on healthcare systems and the general public as well as the prevalence of diseases and impairments associated with old age. In this chapter, we discuss organ failure during agein...

Should We Screen This Patient for Carotid Artery Stenosis?: Grand Rounds Discussion From Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Discussion From Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Ann Intern Med. 2017 Oct 03;167(7):484-492 Authors: Smetana GW, Schermerhorn M, Mukamal KJ Abstract In July 2014, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) published a clinical guideline on screening for asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis. The guideline recommended against screening in asymptomatic adults, based primarily on the results of 3 large randomized trials (grade D recommendation). The principal screening test was carotid ultrasonography, and the intervention in the 3 trials was carotid endarterectomy for patients with stenosis ex...

Inhibition of endothelial Progenitor Cells Inhibition in the first 24 hours of an Acute Ischemic Cerebrovascular Event.
Authors: Blum A, Pastukh N, Sirchan R, Blum N, Chernikoff L, Vaispapir V Abstract BACKGROUND: Endothelial progenitor cells may have a role in ongoing endothelial repair. Impaired mobilization or depletion of these cells may contribute to progression of vascular disease. Our hypothesis was that endothelial progenitor cells would be suppressed in patients with acute cerebrovascular event based on our previous study that found severe endothelial dysfunction in those patients. OBJECTIVES: To study the ability of patients with acute stroke to build colonies of endothelial progenitor cells. METHODS: We studied th...

Introduction Dementia is a major public health issue worldwide, with a serious burden for patients, caregivers, and society, as well as substantial economic impacts (1). Although the prevalence of late-life cognitive impairment and dementia are expected to increase in future, effective disease-modifying treatments are currently unavailable. Therefore, unders...
