America Has No Way to Take Care of Mentally Ill People
With evermore unhoused people on the streets of our biggest cities, and publicized subway crimes in New York, mental health treatment is again in the news. Politicians speak about “caring” for the mentally ill in a new way, which turns out to be the old way—putting them away. The mention of involuntary confinement, predictably, sparks anxiety and controversy, giving rise to the question of whom this policy is meant to help: the people taken away or the rest of population, those shopping, jogging, carrying groceries home, who, presumably, will no longer be bothered by the inconvenient reality of a person s...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 857: A Comparative Investigation of Automatic Speech Recognition Platforms for Aphasia Assessment Batteries
Qiang Fang The rehabilitation of aphasics is fundamentally based on the assessment of speech impairment. Developing methods for assessing speech impairment automatically is important due to the growing number of stroke cases each year. Traditionally, aphasia is assessed manually using one of the well-known assessment batteries, such as the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB), the Chinese Rehabilitation Research Center Aphasia Examination (CRRCAE), and the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE). In aphasia testing, a speech-language pathologist (SLP) administers multiple subtests to assess people with aphasia (PWA). Th...

Categorical perception of lexical tones in Chinese people with post-stroke aphasia
This study used the categorical perception (CP) paradigm, a fine-grained perceptual method, to investigate the perceptual performance of lexical tones in Chinese people with post-stroke aphasia (PWA). Twenty patients with post-stroke aphasia (10 Broca's and 10 Wernicke's) and ten neurologically intact age-matched control participants were recruited to complete both identification and discrimination tasks of the Mandarin Tone 1-2 continuum. In addition, all participants completed tests on their auditory comprehension ability and working memory. The results showed that both Broca's and Wernicke's patients exhibited reduced s...

Acupuncture for Poststroke Dysphagia: A Pilot, Nonrandomized, Self-Controlled Trial.
Conclusions: This pilot study provides preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture for poststroke dysphagia. The findings from this trial can be used as a foundation for future full-scale randomized controlled clinical trials to assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for poststroke dysphagia. Ethics and Dissemination. The ethical approval of the clinical research study was granted by the Research Ethics Committee of both New Territories East and West Cluster of Hong Kong. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants, and the study was undertaken according to the ICH-GCP Guidelines. Trial...

Changes in the corpus callosum during the recovery of aphasia: A case report
Rationale: The corpus callosum, which is the most important fiber pathway linking the bilateral hemispheres, plays a key role in information access, as well as the functional coordination and reorganization between the bilateral hemispheres. However, whether the corpus callosum will undergo structural changes during the recovery of aphasia is still unclear. In the current study, a Chinese aphasic patient with stroke was reported to develop changes in the corpus callosum after speech therapy. Patient concerns: A 33-year-old right-handed male patient had aphasia only without limb paralysis at 14 months after stroke. Di...
