One-year clinical outcome of patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: Insights from KERALA-AF registry
CONCLUSIONS: Despite high risk profile of patients in this registry, use of OAC was suboptimal, whereas antiplatelets were used in nearly half of patients. A relatively high rate of annual mortality and hospitalization was observed in patients with NVAF in Kerala AF Registry.PMID:33714410 | PMC:PMC7961260 | DOI:10.1016/j.ihj.2020.11.152

American Indians Face the Highest Odds for Stroke
THURSDAY, March 4, 2021 -- While strokes strike many Americans, a new study shows the risk is particularly high among American Indians. Researchers already knew that American Indians had the highest risk of atrial fibrillation, which is an...

Infarct volumes of patients with acute ischemic stroke receiving direct oral anticoagulants due to non-valvular atrial fibrillation
Conclusion: We observe, while using DOACs, the infarct volumes of patients who experience stroke are smaller than those with NDAF and using ASA, as well as mRS scores at discharge are low and length of hospital stay is short.

Stroke in cardiac sarcoidosis: Need to worry?
CONCLUSIONS: Ischemic stroke in patients with CS can be attributed to a cardioembolic phenomenon. A high index of clinical suspicion is needed for early diagnosis and management of these patients.PMID:33189209 | PMC:PMC7670250 | DOI:10.1016/j.ihj.2020.07.015

Intravenous Fat Emulsion Does Not Significantly Alter Clotting Markers in Dabigatran-Treated Blood
AbstractDabigatran etexilate is an oral direct thrombin (Factor IIa) inhibitor approved for patients with atrial fibrillation and for management of risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Dabigatran offers advantages over treatment with warfarin, including limited laboratory monitoring. It is equivalent in prevention of stroke and deep vein thrombosis with essentially equivalent complication rates. In contrast to warfarin, reversal of the anticoagulation is less well established. Idarucizumab is available for reversal, however supporting research is mixed; the agent also happens to be quite expensive making av...

Ethnic differences in atrial fibrillation among patients with heart failure in Asia
ConclusionsAmong patients with HF across Asia, clinical correlates and adverse outcomes associated with AF are similar across ethnicities; however, there are striking ethnic variations in the prevalence of AF that are not accounted for by known risk factors.

Critical Issues and Recent Advances in Anticoagulant Therapy: A Review
Angelika Batta, Bhupinder S Kalra, Raj KhirasariaNeurology India 2019 67(5):1200-1212 As the population is aging, clinicians are coming across more patients with atrial fibrillation and venous thromboembolism requiring anticoagulation to prevent stroke and systemic embolisms. Due to a high prevalence and unfavorable consequences, managing thromboembolic diseases have become areas of clinical concern. Traditional anticoagulants like heparin, low molecular weight heparin and warfarin have been used for the prevention and treatment of venous and arterial thromboses. But, issues of bleeding, parenteral route of administration...

Patients who develop post-operative atrial fibrillation have reduced survival after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting
ConclusionThe incidence of POAF was lower than reported in the wider global literature. Increasing age and development of post-operative sepsis were strong independent predictors of POAF. POAF increases the morbidity; length of hospital stay and these patients show decreased survival after off-pump CABG.
